BO is from the off gassing of bacteria, some people have it worse than others. Commercial deodorants do not address the bacteria just the smell, but more effectively than perfume. There is a variety of things you can do to deal with the bacteria. It seems that the deodorants make them worse and if you do nothing it is better than sometimes wearing deodorant. My personal choice is a small dab of zinc ointment under each arm once a week. Works like a charm. I too grew up without indoor plumbing and had a daily cold water wash. I have a cousin who refuses to do anything for her body odor and she is not bad. The occasional scent but I know many that work very hard to keep their smell in check with much less success.

I live a stones throw from Berkeley and patchouli is worn like a badge of honor. Offensive doesn't even begin to describe how that fragrance is abused out here.

In some cultures today, body odor on women is quite erotic.
Not in my world... I worked with a guy who's stink was just like the episode of Seinfeld, the stink jumped from a chair onto me and even into the hamper. I was the shop Stewart at the time so that made it easier to confront him about it as the complaints were many.

I know this all too well. I had to counsel someone 4 weeks ago and later had to let him go due to his horrible breath. I'd be willing to bet he hadn't brushed his teeth in 20 years. He was a new employee and after moving him to several different trainers, all of them complained about the smell. Subtle hints didn't work either. I would grab a piece of gum and offer him some, he wouldn't take it. It got to the point that nobody was willing to train him. Hopefully it was taken as a life lesson.

Sweat on clean skin doesn't stink. As others have mentioned, it's when someone doesn't bathe for an extended period of time that the bacteria gets a chance to multiply and you get the noxious odors happening.

I use mineral salts for the most part but rely on cleanliness to keep most of the smells away...

Not much worse in the world of smells than smelling someone's BO. Ugh...
