Thanked: 4828Oddly enough there is a serious amount of recreation that goes on on the old forestry service roads. Although our density is pretty low here and although people often see bears while out in nature, both bears and people tend to retreat very quickly. There is not enough people around here that hold cubs for better pictures to cause mishaps.

Thanked: 28you guys have all the fun with bears coming around....all we get are coyotes there all over the city area. We did have a bear problem at the trap and skeet club last year. We thought kids were tearing apart out 3d archery targets at night. We found out one evening during a trap shoot it was a very good size black bear doing the damage. He tore that target up like it was nothing. Very strong animal.

I 'think' that this is good sound advice about being and 'trying' to photograph any and all wildlife;

Thanked: 3228Yes, good solid advice about taking photos of animals and the blazing speed a grizzly can turn on at a flick of a switch. Use as long a telephoto lens as you can and crop the image to get closer.
Once had the opportunity to see 2 young grizzly bears chase an elk down a slope in Yellowstone NP. The elk was flat out with the bears at it's heels. That was one lucky and fast elk to get away. After seeing that I would believe even with a 100 yard head start the grizzly would run me down before I got too far.
Right after that I was try to take a photo of a mother grizzly and her 2 young off spring, the ones that had chased the elk, when I heard a vehicle braking hard gravel flying. That was followed by doors slamming and kids running noisily past me with their P&S cameras towards the bears. Said a few choice words which the mother of the kids did not like. So I asked her if she realized those bears were now looking at a 6 pack of lunch? Only then did the light bulb in her head come on. People bring crap on themselves and the animals usually pay for it.

Many a year ago when my youngest brother was probably in about 7th or 8th grade my dad was heading up to the Tucannon to cut wood for the winter. He asked my brother and his friend to come along to help with the loading and said that they could just go fishing while he felled and cut.
My brothers friend went fishing down stream while my brother went upstream. Dad said that about an hour later he heard the God Damnedest Screaming and Hollering from my brother while he was running through the brush.
Seems he was fishing along when he heard something. He turned and was about 20 ft from a cow elk. He said he just froze. The cow looked at him then slowly laid down and shortly later pushed out a calf.
As soon as the cow had licked the calf clean she turned her attention to my brother and that's when he started running for his life!
I don't know how may people have ever been that close to an elk on accident and saw what my brother witnessed.Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 4828At that age he was probably completely grossed out at such a sight and would not realize the wonder and good fortune for many years!

Lucky to be alive and tell the tale.
Shawn, my brother was well aware of the wonder he was witnessing, he also was well aware of the consequences of not getting the hell out of there and as I've said, to live to tell the tale.
My dad used to say: "Not many white men have ever seen what Russ did".Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.
