As for the story of your family. That is truly the American dream and something to hang your hat on without a doubt. Many of us have these stories passed down and they serve as real motivation for people who are fortunate enough to have families that stick together and can take pride in their heritage. Most of the people in my generation come from split families through no fault of their own. I'm not asking anyone to read any more into that than what I just said for fear of being accused of playing the blame game, but facts are facts.

I can say most assuredly that my ability to get a job after 2008 was a stroke of luck. I find it surprising that you have the confidence to state that it wasn't without having the slightest idea of my situation. There were people in my class that graduated with higher GPA's, interviewed for the same job, at the same time and were turned down. To this day I'm convinced that I was selected because I happened to be a Bears fan like the interviewer. Now if arbitrarily picking a sports team at the age of 6 to be a fan of and possibly getting a job because of that constitutes "hard work" then I'm a real hard worker!
I also said nothing about minimum wage or migrant workers. Generally speaking the arguments against millennial work ethic are limited to the US, or at the very least, developed countries. Migrant workers are an exception to this, and of course they continue to be the backbone of our country specifically because of their work ethic regardless of their generation. Though I will point out that many times migrant workers live in single houses with multiple generations living in the same home. I'm not sure how that's admirable, but when American citizens do it it's despicable. No one in my generation wants to live with their parents any more than anyone in your generation wanted to live with their parents. The very notion of that is somewhat comical.

I agree that relative success lies in the individual. But I would also say that it's really hard to pull yourself by the bootstraps when there is a foot on your chest and no bootstraps to grasp.
    Here is a pet peeve for you;

I dislike winers & people who make excuses for others.

",,,,,who are fortunate enough to have families that stick together"

When the Patriarch of our family died in December of 1979, our family devolved into drugs and murder. The land was sold off & people went to prison, two for life in Georgia.
I was offered the Raleigh Penitentiary or the Marine Corps, guess which one I took.

Your analogy of "migrant workers" & American citizens having multiple generations in the same house; I been in both many times. The difference, migrant workers aren't sitting around the dinner table complaining about not being bank tellers or convenience store employees.

"But I would also say that it's really hard to pull yourself by the bootstraps when there is a foot on your chest and no bootstraps to grasp."

My advice for this comment; Trade your Nike's in for a pair of boots , then kick the Sh*t outta the person who has their foot on your chest.

Finally stop making excuses for a crap load of individuals who have settled for less than what they can be.

Pet peeve of the day, wearing shorts and flip flops while riding a motorcycle! Stop doing this. Also a back pack, are you trying to be decapitated?

My first road bike was a Yamaha 250, but I still had a Harley leather jacket and gloves. Road rash is at least partially preventable.

Yes it is some what preventable, I saw a guy today, helmet, shorts, and sandals. Why the helmet? Does he want to remember why his legs are skinned to the bone?

In regard to multi-generational families living in the same house; families I've known personally have been Asian and in every case the older members worked extremely hard and after retiring continued to work tirelessly as cooks, cleaners and caretakers for the young in the family with their adult children of working age out in the workforce.

The trend with young Americans "living in their parent's basements" without jobs seems to be a reverse of what I've seen in the families I'm familiar with.

Twenty somethings living at home: if they really loathe the idea enough they'll find alternatives. We're assuming as a rule that they're single. I shared an apartment with roommates at that age and ate ramen, fried eggs, fried potatoes and basically worked and slept with some partying thrown in. Lived on the cheap. Good times. Did I have cable, video games, cell phone, free food, free rent and other creature comforts? He'll no. But I was on my own and I was....free. I think it's truly sad that a huge number of young people are missing that experience.

Look, I didn't mean to rustle your jimmies so bad, fella. You have your opinion and I have mine I guess.
When you have to resort to sarcasm in an argument you can be pretty well assured you have nothing left to offer. So I'll just leave it at this... I'm not going to engage in an argument with someone that doesn't see the irony in posting their pet peeve as "wining" or whining on a thread explicitly dedicated to listing pet peeves... Beginning to see that it isn't a lack of, or an abundance of perception you have compared to me that's leading to our disagreement. Instead, it's that one thing you can't fix, as my father would say.

My writing sucks and I know it but I try to make them readable. Ron, that was a great one. I had never seen or read that. I find that a wonderful thing to share.
My wife use to tell me to quit using !!!! so damn much and I've finally figured it out that they are not needed as much as I thought. Sometime the words can make the point for you.
