I had a number 1 all over for a couple of years, my friend and I used to do each others with the clippers because the only skill we needed was thoroughness.

It was great, in the shower then a quick rub with towel and my hair was bone dry.

I have been cutting my own hair since April of 2020 with respectable results. I purchased an Oster 76 and a wide variety of guards. Now, with experience, I see I only use about three guards but in the beginning it was of comfort to have the options.

I would suggest the following for the novice:

• Watch a variety of YouTube videos showing basic techniques by people who have hair similar to yours. This guy was helpful for me:

• Take your time! First time took me 90 minutes. I can now do the job in about 20.
• Low expectations. Do not seek perfection- know when good enough is good enough.
• Mirrors. Lots of mirrors.
• A second pair of hands and eyes from a sympathetic partner who has an interest in you not looking like a prison escapee. Do not ask assistance from current or former members of the United States Marine Corps.
• A fallback position if all goes wrong, i.e., a hat or willingness to shave it all off.
• A job that allows or expects a certain amount of eccentricity.

Just gave myself a fresh one. I figured this would be a good exercise for my son.

Covid haircuts are still in. Lol. Went to visit my dad last year (he's 85) he commented how the heck did I get a haircut. so I gave him and my boys the old fashioned buzz job in the garage. My son used to do back of my neck. Always had his hand out for a.tip. he got the typical response. I will take it out of your rent or inheritance. Lol

Covid came 25 years or more after I started cutting my own hair. I had trouble finding a barber to cut it the way I wanted it plus they didn't want to straight shave my neck. I figured since I always had to fix it then I might as well cut it myself. My wife has been shaving it for me but she hates it. She's afraid she'll cut me and I'll bleed out or whatever. Since my son straight shaves also I figured it would be a good exercise for him shaving someone else. Anyway it was a good father/son activity.

My girlfriend always looks at me funny when I use a straight razor on the back of my neck. I am not sure if she thinks it is safer for me to do it myself, or just knows my independent tendencies enough not to offer.

I've shaved my own with a DE but never really tried it with a straight. I'm not so much worried about cutting my fool head off as I am about keeping the line nice and straight.

I don't have to worry about that so much because I don't really keep my hair that short. I am just getting the fuzz off my neck between professional haircuts. Also, I can't see it, so I don't care.
