My tastes are also pretty eclectic. I don't listen anymore to a lot of music I used to, say 10 years ago, but a quick check on iTunes shows that I've got 35days worth of music that I liked enough to put on my computer/ipod (and 12 days of podcasts). I notice there's hardly any metal (some metallica and acdc, just for kicks, but that's it, ah I see I have Gåte).
Most of it is Classical (largely symphonic and choral it looks like), Jazz (mostly classics like Davis, Monk, Coltrane, Armstrong, Jarrett, Mingus, but also Nina Simone, Eva Casidy, Santana), of the Rock type it's mostly punk (Velvet Underground,Clash), hippie stuff like Hendricks and Dylan. Naturally the american folk goes with the 60s, so I've got to have some Baez some Lonard Cohen but I do have the 3-volume anthology of american folk music, that is the real authentic stuff - early 1900s recordings and it's amazing. What else - full Pink Floyd discography seems worth noting
I've got penty of modern stuff too, on full discorgaphies Radiohead should be mentioned if Radiohead collection can be called 'full', but I have plenty of fairly mainstream indie stuff (white stripes, spoon, pixies, muse, beirut, interpol, barenakedladies...)
Bunch of french stuff from the 60's, Piaf, Aznavour, Gall.... plus the 80's are covered too - U2, Eurythmics, Blondie, Abba for when I'm in a silly mood, I guess
A bunch of international stuff - I usually go for authentic. And of course plenty of soundtracks - last one I bought few weeks ago was the fantastic Elevator to the Gallows.
I don't know whether to mention rap/hip-hop, but i've got some interesting stuff there too.

One thing I'm most certainly missing is country unless Johnny Cash or the soundtrack to Oh Brother Where Art Thou? counts (I don't consider them as it's not quite what most people have in mind when they think country). But yeah, that's one style of music I'm not very partial to.

The one I'm most obsessive about though is the classical music. I have 7 versions of Mozart's requiem just because I could never find one that is absolutely perfect in every aspect. If Toscanini had recorded one that may have been it, but I've got my top three as Hogwood, Herewege and Marriner. Bach's Mass in B minor is another one I have several recordings of and I like Gardiner's best. I almost went the same way with Mahler and Wagner, but got my senses and only own 2-3 recordings of each work. The main challenge is the wide dynamic range of classical music - I encode it in lossless because of this, but still a CD takes about 500MB!
    Ah, need a bigger ipod.

now you know a whole lot about me and my musical oddities... (hopefully the big post made most of you skip it)

    Briefly

    Right now:
Cansei de ser sexy, Arctic monkeys, Bloc party, Hot chip, Peter bjorn and John (great tune called young folks - I played it to death), Muse, Radiohead, The Avalanches.

    Times past:
Punk phase: Crass, Sex Pistols, Sham 69, Joy division (still love JD), The Damned, memory going - that's not a band!

MOD phase: Nine below zero, The who

Synthesiser: Ultravox, Tangerine dream, Tomita... hmm brain dying

Space rock: favourite all time band was Hawkwind, closely followed by one of their founders, Lemmys Motorhead.

My hippy phase (a good few years back) Donovan, Roy Harper, Led Zep, Gong, Pink Floyd, Can (an album called Tago Mago was mind blowing for me about 25 years ago!)

OOh, that took me back a bit. Have missed loads but there you go. Like a lot of classical too. Mostly in the car we now listen to 'the wheels on the bus go round and round'!

    cheers

Tough question for me. I enjoy a wide variety... jazz, standards and show tunes, folk, some country, the lighter side of rock (ie, not metal or steel), and occasionally some bluegrass or new age. I guess if I had to pick one, it's piano jazz... a load of Joe Sample and Liz Story CDs in the player makes for a wonderful listen. I'm not fond of most rap... I find it musically boring and the lyrics are usually offensive to my beliefs of how people should respect/treat one another. Not a fan of reggae either... the rhythms are ok but the songs are usually so long I get bored with them halfway through.

I listen to just about anything, but a LOT of the pop trash out today makes my teeth ache. Some opera too. Jazz is my favourite stuff these days.

I listen to lots of different genres, but mostly because my beautiful wife introduces me to it and then I really start to get into it. This includes world music like Afro Celts, Celtic music and Indian Music. My personal favorite genre is late 60's to early 70's, and my favorite band if I had to pick one would be the Doors.

Yup, I like music, a lot, and the more the better.
There's never enough fiddle music in the world. What kind of fiddle you got?

A lot of classical and opera. But after that, it is a real free-for-all (Nuge). Seriously though, the only stuff I really won't listen to is any rap, most hip-hop, and most of the pop stuff out these days. I'm not so big on the new country music, but I do find a lot of the old country to my liking.

Tough question for me as music is such an amazing and varied gift humans have been given both in making and in listening to it.

At age 15 I started with liking metal (that was 1985) and quickly was introduced to the world of punk. Growing up in Minnesota that meant heavy doses of Husker Du and The Replacements among other lesser known MN bands that were known in MN at the time. Sneaking into bars at age 17 to watch shows, etc. From there, my horizons have spanned from old blues (Robert Johson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi John Hurt, etc), to Classical (Mingus, Bill Evans....), 70's rock, Richard Thompson ("1952 Vincent Black Lightning what a song and what a cool looking cycle! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azB7B8hrVZY
), Big Star, Alex Chilton (the king of obscurity), Jonathan Richman, The Modern Lovers, Neil Young, Dylan, Zep, Man, almost everything. Aside from the Beasties I just don't get into rap/hip hop.

Country....I love seeing old clips on You Tube with the original Carter Family playing outside. Simple yet blows me away.

Actually, to fund my razor "habit", I'm starting to go through my vinyl collection and list some of my records on Ebay. Gotta get more funds somewhere!

Really, almost anything but hip hop, rap, pop, and country. I like some good techno every once in a while, and same goes for opera. My favorites are french and italian- I refuse to listen to english "opera". My go to music though is typically 60's-80's. I'm a HUGE Aerosmith fan.

Any of you in the US that spend good amounts of time at or near a computer should really check out pandora.com. You can set up different internet stations with great quality music and no commercials, all based off bands, composers, or songs you like. I have them set for musical moods. For instance, I have a Norah Jones station that plays tons of music I've never heard that is the same dreary piano music Norah does so well. It's a great way to find bands that play songs you like.

I'm not so sure about metal being similar to classical- you're going to have to explain that one a bit

QO, how about german opera? I guess Wagner would be the classics example, but you may need a special mood for it . I'm actually not familiar with French one at all.

I'm also not sure about metal being similar to classical. I mean some of it (not too common though) does have significant music complexity, but not quite on the level of classical music.

I've tried pandora few times over the last few weeks - it's not bad at all. I've heard of it many times over the last few years, but I haven't really used it. They do a pretty good job to categorize similar music, so it's indeed a great way to discover new music.
