Here are a couple that have served me well thus far
1. Be wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove... Thats a bible one but simple and to the point, keep your eyes open for evil around you but don't be eager for a fight. Look toward mercy first but be prepared for war.
2. The only thing that separates a journeyman from an apprentice is that the journeyman knows how to fix his foul ups.

When swimming in unfamiliar waters always wear your rain coat...
This came along with the speech my dad gave us where he stated that if we got a girl pregnant, while we still lived under his roof, he was going to cut part of our anatomy off...

Thanked: 3When you are up to your ears in crap keep your damn mouth shut!
-DAD-
Any dumbass can make a baby but it takes a real man to make a family.
-DAD again-
Make a plan, stick to it but be ready to run like hell!!!
-training officer in my first sniper course-
Know when to run and know when to hide and if nobody is paying attention to you stay there and stay still. If you run remember that almost anybody, no matter how stupid, will notice a running bush.
-same officer- that advice has stood me well in dealing with some of the challenges in marriage "Oh oh she just spotted the new razor; hide man hide! Dont be the running bush!"

As A Youngster I was Told...
An old sea daddy who happened to be a retired Seattle beat cop told me:
Never run when you can walk,
Never walk when you can sit,
Never sit when you can lie down,
Always count your steps so you know the shortest distance.
It does seem to work
