No, but at least alleged criminals are accused, tried, and convicted. There is due process. An accused person can defend himself, and everybody knows what happened.

The past few years, people just disappeared, got no trial, got tortured, and noone got an explanation.

If someone if a terrorist, then apprehend him, try him, and if he is convicted, sentence him. I don't mind. that is what due process is for. But just doing away with all the rules because they are inconvient is a crime itself.

And it's more than 3 terrorists that were waterboarded. And waterboading was not the only thing that happened, as evidenced by the photos. And the US didn't do all those things themselves. They also exported inmates to syria or ethiopia for interrogation.
There is an interview with a high level CIA operative who admitted that prisoners where flown to those countries for interrogation.
When he was asked what a 3d world government agency could do regarding interrogation that a first world government agency with a multi billion dollar budget could not do. He couldn't answer that question...

There ya go freeird. I just gave you a "thanks" to up your reputation.

Giving someone bad reputation just because they are either politically disinterested or don't care to watch the pomp and circumstance of the inauguration is bad form. I watched the inauguration, but that doesn't mean that I should be mad at others who didn't.

It was a *historic* (I'm sick of that word) moment, but it wasn't the most exciting thing ever. I thought it was cool to see John Williams (wrote the music for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, and just about every other movie that had a friggin awesome soundtrack) musical piece performed, didn't care too much for Aretha Franklin's performance (she's had much better days and much better hats), but when it all boils down, it was long and drawn out.

Plus, the actual oath was fumbled by the chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Maybe he should write that down next time.

Not watching the inauguration is NOT the same as being unpatriotic. I'm sure Freebird is much more of a patriot than some of the self serving elected officials in D.C.

If you gave Freebird bad reputation for his post, please PM me so I can find one of your posts and give you bad reputation for such a shabby move.

Remember this: Without multiple parties on the ballots, we citizens of the US wouldn't have a choice to vote for or against. Without this choice, we wouldn't have democracy. So if you are unhappy with the election results, just be happy that we actually had an election.

Anyway - freebird has an eyepatch and uses mustache wax. That makes him much more bad@$$ than all of us put together. The only way he could up his bad@$$ level is to cut off his hand and replace it with a hook.

Thanks Ben lol, don't forget that I shave with a straight and drive a pickup rofl.

I think anyone who voted their conscience is a patriot. As far as Obama,no I don't care for the guy. This one quote sums up why really well:

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

I'm one of those small town guys who believes in the Bible and also in the right to keep and bear arms. Yep, he is the President, and for America's sake I wish him a successful term, or maybe I should say I wish America a successful term while under his watch. As far as the inauguration went, I'm not one to sit in front of a tv for hours upon end watching the politico's dance and get sworn in. All the money that they spent on that shindig could've been spent better elsewhere.

But what does this have to do with Obama, specifically?

Providing local jobs is a responsibility of local government, not of the presidency.
Obama could boost the US economy nationwide, but that still wouldn't mean that industry would come to every small village.

You can dislike Obama for several reasons, but the presidency has no direct effect on small town industry, any more than Bill Gates is directly responsible for every line of windows code that was ever written.

Btw, We had the same here a couple decades ago when the mines closed. Entire cities became ghost towns. Eventually the local economy recovered (partially) but a lot of people had to move to where jobs are.
Even in my hometown, there is little work for people with masters degrees. We had only local stuff (butcher, baker) small busineses and some semi heavy industry. I had to relocate or face a horrible commute. So I relocated.

Actually, that was a direct quote from Obama on the campaign trail , and goes to show his feelings about two subjects near and dear to alot of Americans.

Ah ok. I didn't know that.

To a certain extent he is right though. A lot of places like he mentions have been lied to by several consecutive administrations, as if a change in precidency would make it better. The truth is that only local politicians and the industry themselves can change specific things.

For example, detroit car industry will not recover until the big 3 finally start making decent cars. There is nothing Obama, or any other president can do about it. The only thing he can do is steer the US economy as a whole, with tax plans, incentives and channeling foreign trade.

I find it very interesting that the countries that screamed loudest for guantanamo's closure now want nothing to do with the prisoners (yes, I'm looking at you Netherlands).

Were the Netherlands the ones who put them under arrest in the first place?
