It's strange. Some people think we're lunatics smoking crack for shaving with an implement like we do. Others look upon us with admiration for shaving like we do.

Most of my family & friends think I'm crazy for shaving with a straight. My grandmother disapproved, until she found out that one of my razors belonged to her father. Yep, that razor with the bone-colored handles changed her mind about the whole thing.

I think I've figured her out though....

It's like this--she doesn't want the hassle of killing me herself so she turns a blind eye to what she terms "my newest stupid hobby" hoping that I'll find some way of doing it myself!

but I've got her number now.....

My wife doesn't mind my straight shaving too much. Some other hobbies she does have issues with. Just the other day she told me if I sold my guns and pipes she would flex on her NO motorcycle rule (she had an uncle lose a leg on a bike and now hates them).

What do you think: should I give up the guns and pipes for a motorcycle?

Give up the pipes for a motorcycle........and cigars! ink:

By the way, my wife supports me with an almost blind eye. I think if I asked her what she thought about me walking down the street naked playing a Irish flute, draging a cart full of rhesus monkeys, and frying on asid. Her responce would be "if that what you want to do, go for it". My wife is very understanding. Any thing short of "dating" her sister would probably meet with two thumbs up.

My wife really likes my shaving with a straight razor.
She says it's masculine and the result is very clean and smooth.
She only dislikes sometimes the time I spend on shaving.

    Best regards

I get mixed responses from friends and family.
The wifey seems to think it's way dangerous, and she's going to find my headless body slumped over the sink some day, but she is starting to get used to the idea very slowly...

Friends seem to think it's cool, though they will usually ask why?

We went to dinner with some friends the other night, at a japanese steakhouse, where they cook right at your table, think Beni Hana.
Anyhow, I was chatting with the cook while he was effortlessly slicing steak and asked him who sharpens his knife. He does his own, every morning, with a Arkansas stone, and that lead into a sharpening discussion.
My friends mom and dad were with us also, her father is a plastic surgeon in Santa Monica, and he was sharing with us that he also sharpens his scalpels before every surgery, on an Arkansas stone.
I thought that was pretty cool, in this day of throw-away, one use type things, this well respected surgeon still uses quality equipment and does the blade care himself.

Steve, Is your surgeon friend using vintage scalpels? All the ones I see at the medical center were I work are disposable blades on a handle that can be sterilized. It must be for pride of work. I imagine for what he must charge, he can buy them by the truckload.

Yeah, he uses vintage scalpels, no disposables.
He says that he can get them sharper than the one use blades and he likes the way they cut.

    Question Impressed?

It's been a few months now and I think I'm beginning to get a reading on her. I think she thinks it's kinda cool that I'm doing this which is a lot better than having her tell me I'm nuts all the time (which she still sometimes does for other reasons).
When I'm honing she asks which ones I'm working on and why, wants to know about them, how many I have now ...
We were in the pharmacy and saw a cheap boars hair brush and knowing that I'm not using ine (yet?) she said "If I had to shave I'd definitely want one of those" (she waxes).
Out of the blue on our trip to the capital this weekend she asks me which razors Ive brought along. I asked why she's so curious and offered to lend her one if she needs it. I think she may be a bit embarrased at her own interest so I don't push her and she doesn't say much. That has made it tough to be sure what she thinks, but it's safe to say she supports me so far. Of course if I go MAD like some of you guys here and start buying and repairing a hundred razors a year she might change her tune, but I think I'm ok for now.
