It is not illegal to be a bigot just as it is not illegal to be an ass or to be stupid. You may believe how you like in our country! It is how you put your beliefs into practice that may be against the law though.

Not sure whether this is true in Canada.

Just a point of clarification: she's not a bigot and her opinion in this context does not qualify her as such.

Let's try to keep it civil and avoid rash name calling.

She is so a bigot, if ever there were a bigot. Wanting others to have less rights than yourself pretty much makes you a bigot.

The real question is when did we start caring what Miss America contestants have to say? Watching Miss America for the personality competition is cornier than reading Playboy for the articles. After all Miss America contestants are such shining examples of intelligence

Very true, but since you're bringing up the bible, do you remember the parts of the bible that talk about the types of fornication and unnatural uses of the male and female organs? If you do then do you also remember that it tells of those committing such acts (along with other sins listed including lies) shall not inherit the kingdom of God?

This is why I didn't address whether she is a bigot or not in the first place as it misses the point of the thread.

Wow. It's not as much about her opinion as it is more about whether she has a right to freely express that opinion, especially when prodded! Besides which, I contend that the question was out of place.

but did she actually say they shouldn't have the right? she said in her household she believed it was a man and a woman.

it's like the way I feel about howard stern, I really don't like most of anything I've ever heard on his show, but he's in the front lines of first amendment action, using it to the fullest. I defend that. I also respect the fact that Miss CA was honest. I'd rather somebody disagree with me but be honest and discuss things. and of course as much as other opinions tend to make us angry when they differ from ours, it's doing the same to them.

I too think it is a crazy question to ask. not at all what I care about hearing from my contestants. I want questions like, "have you and the other contestants had pillow fights in your underwear?" stuff that really matters.

I don't know how many of you have gay or lesbian friends. I voted the last time it came round in CA in favor of letting the marriages be legally recognized. on principle I don't agree with modifying constitutions, state or fed, with anything that restricts a person's lifestyle choices. Protect us from each other where absolutely necessary, but people should get to do what they like if it doesn't harm others. since then I've become really good friends with some same sex couples. the hardest part of the whole Prop 8 thing here was when one of them told me how much it hurt that people she knew, and acted like they were her friends, would vote to ban her marriage rights and would hang out with her and her wife but not want them to have the same legal status.

The other hard part was working for the educational system, knowing for a fact they don't teach about marriage in schools, and then seeing the ad campaign saying that if the prop. was defeated our kids would learn about same sex marriages in school. I know a few people who said that was the reason they voted for it, that's what I was talking about playing dirty.

I'd still totally make out with Miss CA though.

Now you get close to the making of laws that govern everybody based on a set of precepts followed by a segment. Yes, I know those parts, I'm also pretty sure there's something about judging not lest ye too, and something about plank in thine own eye before the spec in somebody elses......it's such a big book, so many things. I think it's best for people to try and remember that they aren't God. Cause there's a whole lot in there about love and kindness and other virtues I think Christians are supposed to try and have, and in debates like this a lot of them forget that really quick.

I mean really, if He consulted with me everybody that drove under the speed limit would at the least be spending some time in purgatory. It's best judgement be His deal, better for everybody probably.
