Its long ago that they set that limit (1970 - 80), so I can't really remember, but it happened after a hard struggle with the church and everyone else, including when it is life as an individual or something else before that..

Of course, if we weren't so afraid of contraception/medically accurate(!) sex education in this country, abortion might be a lot less of an issue... Certainly, it wouldn't eliminate it (lots of medical complications already listed plus things like rape, etc.), but if people actually took precautions...

And killing doctors is just beyond wrong.

Another way to say it is that if we weren't so afraid of responsibility, abortion might be a lot less of an issue

Don't blame it exclusively on the availability of contraception.
You have a much higher pressure going to raise big families, than we do.
    Over here one is desirable
    two correct
three is luxury (and a little mistake perhaps)
and anythig from four up is dissocial.

    Boardnames like MomOf4, ChildlessNotByChoice, BrennansRudiesAndJenniesMom
are so common at the US soap making boards. There must be a reason.

Right on Jimbo, that's the part I forgot to bring up when posting.
From what I've read in the Bible, the bad people were the ones Jesus is really interested to hang out with. At least in the bible this is presented as being an issue to those who considered themselves moral and good - they seem to have issues with him partying with criminals tax collectors, drinking large quantities of alcohol with them.

That seems reasonable, but perhaps one may need to take into account that the brain actually develops during one's lifetime. I really don't know the details of what neurologist would look for in determining the damage to the brain.

The Brain death - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is interesting, and the legal definition adopted in most states seems to be
Uniform Determination of Death Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most certainly the such definition would require differentiation of cells, so that the brain is a well established organ (probably about 25 days from conception since that's where heart beat can be detected) and then there may be difficulties in measuring the activity. So no person with the belief that life starts at conception would accept this definition.

I think that says more about the demographics of soapmaking forum members than the general population.

I can assure you that my female coworkers (engineers) have a very opposite view, and I've even heard them teasing the ladies that do decide to have children. it most likely varies by field. for career-driven women (my wife, for example) children are nothing short of anathema.
