Disclaimer: I am NOT defending PETA. I think they are a bunch of nut jobs.
That being said, The Humane Society (at least in my area) also euthanizes HUGE numbers of animals because of "medical conditions."
These medical conditions frequently amount to nothing more than a cold, which you wouldn't even CONSIDER taking your cat to a vet for. One sniffle, and if they are close to full, they'll simply put the animal to sleep.
They have a very small budget for medical care, and tend to spend it on special cases that would be especially adoptable.
If there is a building wide outbreak of the sniffles however, they will simply euthanize every cat that sneezes, on rare occasion this would mean hundreds of cats in a single day. I know all this because as I mentioned, my ex-wife was/is a "Feline Welfare Coordinator" at the local Humane Society. Her job was to make those kinds of decisions, and last time I spoke to her, which was a long time ago, it killed her a little inside every day.

I recommend you all sponsor a PETA member:
For every animal you don't eat, I'm going to eat three.

Oh come on...please admit that there is a WORLD of difference between the average vegetarian and a PETA nutjob.
I've been a strict vegetarian, I've been a vegan. Now, I settled on what I consider the appropriate moral level...I simply do not eat mammals. And I sit happily with friends and family as they eat steak. I love steak. I LOVE bacon. I miss them terribly. I just feel I ought not eat it, so I do not.

I can't stand PETA. I never liked them, but since seeing that Penn and Teller episode about them, I absolutely hate them. There aren't too many organizations that I dislike as much as I dislike PETA (the RIAA and MPAA are up there). Like Mormons, I don't mind veggies and vegans until they try to turn me into one of them.
Like they say, if God didn't want us to eat meat, then why'd he make it so tasty? Plus, the West wasn't won on salad
