Another big name in the explosions and CGI scene is Uwe Boll, a German. My favorite films of the past 10 years, the Lord of the Rings series of films, were funded by Hollywood. New Zealand was the driving force and talent behind the films, certainly, and they did an amazing job of it, but they were funded by Hollywood money.
Ah but now peter jackson has his own money to produce and fund because of it and a good few of the films mentioned were a good example of the "best of both" for example Ronin, Bourne. US money with European production, all the crew and stuntmen there were european, and (this may be controversial) european stunt drivers are regarded as being better drivers than US stunt drivers. Just look at the Car chases in both the mentioned films.. Unspectacular cars driven to their limit. Especially in Ronin. The original Taxi is one of my favourite films and that was an old peugeot lol

What makes (most) European films little different is the fact that they use their own language (usually). They have also much wider impact from their own cultures and habits. That makes them more interesting, imho. Of course they make some crap in Europe too, but watching only films with spoken English leaves a lot of pearls outside.

Of course they make some excellent movies in USA but mainstream movies these days are likely to cause brain damages. It is like tryin to find jewels from huge dump yard. What did happen to great and intelligent US movie industry? I do not want to watch movies where car tires are screaming even on a dirt road and finally the hero saves the world. Of course such films make money.
Everyone has his/her own taste. I was just about to say that the latest movie i saw was "The American" but oops. The director is Dutch and the movie is filmed in Sweden & Italy.
No seriously. I like movies made by Coen bros, Jim Jarmuch, for example. And many others.

The thing about modern Hollywood, for the most part, is a formula. You need this many actors, this many boobs, this many explosions. They have a formula that calculates the maximum profits.

Big american cars have their place and that sir is a stunning film, steve mcqueen is sorely missed. Does anyone remember when actors weren't necessarily pretty? They could just act, that's what they did and were they good at it. I wouldn't call the likes of Dustin hoffman, De Niro, Gene Hackman, Christopher Walken, etc etc great looking guys or pinups. But they could damn well ACT. Some of the pretty boys get there eventually, I actually rate Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in, and this is very important, THE RIGHT MOVIE. I think the modern equivalent of those classic greats though are guys like tom hanks and edward norton. Seriously, skinny nerdy lawyer in the people vs Larry Flint to hulking Nazi in american history x? then fight club.. Brad Pitt sorely needed to do a film like that.

Does anyone remember a time if, you had said the dude from Turner and Hooch, The Money Pit and Dragnet was going to be one of the greatest current american actors, you would have laughed out loud? I do. I omitted Big there because i think there was definitely a twinkling of things to come

    I really liked expendables.
It is almost over the top, but not quite.
I agree with Ben that you should go into it without expectations. The whole movie is really a homage to the 80s action movie. It's fun, but do not expect plot depth.

Many excellent European movies are re-made by hollywood into pulp.
The original 'Taxi' for example is a good movie. The hollywood remake is just trash.

Although Kurt Russel looks a bit dorky as Wyatt.
Another classic imo is gangs of new york.
