The thing I love about old westerns is that they take the time to build up the tension between the characters. It's amazing how much you can do with stillness rather than flying all over the place

When i was a kid (back then long time ago) my favorite westerns were High Noon (1952), Shane (1953) and some masterpieces from John Ford. They still are.
One of the top movies ever made (imho) was Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood). True Grit from Coen bros ain't bad either.

I love the Marx brothers. My personal list:
    1) Horse feathers
    2) A night at the Opera
    3) A Day at the Races
    4) Duck Soup
    5) Monkey Business
    6) Go West

Just avoid some of the real late ones like Love Happy or A Night in Casablanca.

I'm also a big fan of Errol Flynn. Amazingly effortless in his action sequences and charisma to burn.
    1) The Adventures of Robin Hood
    2) Captain Blood
    3) The SeaHawk
    4) Gentleman Jim
    5) Dodge City

I agree with the above, Errol flynn is a joy to watch. I don't understand the love for the new true grit though, although I'm a big Coen bros fan, Although very enjoyable it falls short of the original in nearly every way the one saving grace is the young actress that plays the girl a marked improvement from the original. Besides that I don't see the need for a line for line/scene for scene remake. No country for old men will make you rethink what an action film can be. Nearly anything with Tom Hanks is well done as are most Matt Damon movies. The Bourne series is great although I wish they would have stuck with the books which have a better story line. As far as the best war movies I think the longest day tops them all although platoon is my favorite Schindler's list, battleship potemkin, and the great escape also make it into that genre in my mind. Clint Eastwood has been doing some good stuff recently although he doesn't have a lot of range. Casino and goodfella are still my favorite mob movies and my cousin Vinny has to be the best comedy of all time out side of that any Mel Brooks movie is great. As far as movies from this year "black swan" still tops my list great acting and you get to watch Mila Kunis for 2 hours (a good way to pass a night). So much talent is in animation these days many of those movies are on par with regular ones although I hate feeding children the global warming thing Walle choked me up, it's amazing what can be said with two words and somehow computer animated robots have more screen presence then most actors these days.

I agree. I recommend The Money Pit. One of my favorite scenes is when Tom goes crazy while stuck in the ceiling, and sings Anna anna boanna banana fanna fo fanna fe fi momanna. Anna!

Well, if we are singing the praises of Tom Hanks, what about Bill Murray? Caddy Shack, Ghostbusters and my particular favourite Stripes. All comedy Gold!

don't forget his short cameo in zombieland. Bill murray, playing himself in a post apocalyptic zombie infested LA. Genius.

Also, the life aquatic and lost in translation, the man was always funny, but i never realised how damn intelligent he was as well

Oh yeah - loved that bit in Zombieland. Warning: mild drug use.

I love westerns too, been some great contemporary revival westerns in the last ten years. Open Range was amazing, and True Grit was also great.

what sticks out in my mind was, last time i was in texas, one of my friends, who was local and had some sort of family history extending back to the old days of the west told me "that film open range, that's a real cowboy film.. he (Kevin Costner) played a proper Gunfighter. That scene near the end when the shootout starts and he walked up to the guy that shoot his buddy and says "which of you you shot him?", and that cocky SOB in black says "me"? he just draws on him and blows him away, none of this high noon bulls**t"

By the way, Kevin Costner right? that guy is one of those actors that can really act when he gets the right part and isn't on an ego trip, same as Mark Whalberg etc. If you haven't seen Mr Brooks, I HIGHLY recommend it, william hurt nearly steals it but not quite.. thirteen days was also a great performance from him.

And on the subject of great actors working well in films, Heat.. One of the best scenes of all time IMO is Pacino and DeNiro getting a cup of coffee.
