It looks like this recall has had some unintended consequences for the unions.
Most members had their union dues automatically deducted from their pay. 40,000 members have opted out of this arrangement.

i'm on the fence about unions...my experience with the projectionist unions (believe me, they exist) and my mom's with teacher unions haven't been great. but i also understand that the reasons unions became so powerful in the first place is because employers were taking advantage of the workers and they wanted to level the playing field. like anything...started out with noble intentions and in a lot of situations, has since been pushed too far.
i suppose if unions go away, that's the way it needs to be right now...but just remember everything happens in cycles. at some point, corporations will start taking advantage of workers again...unions will come back...it's just a matter of when.

Thanked: 3228Sort of similar view on unions as mine. There was/is a valid reason that they exist and we are now in the process of regressing to the point where they will be needed again. I never knew who was going to screw me first, the company or the union. Having said that I would still rather have one when dealing with a large company than not. Some protection from abuse is better than none.

Where did I get the idea that balancing one's budget was a good idea? And who is the person that insists on over spending not only current income, but future income as well? Only a silly idea, isn't it. Right Wing??? I'm not convinced of spending beyond one's ability to pay. Right thinking, not right wing!!!!

Companies tell their employees that Unions are evil. They only take your money and do nothing for you. if that was the case why are companies terrified of them. Why do they always try to stack the deck against them and bring in outside consultants for strategy against them. I would think they would welcome them because after a year or so folks would see what they do and then get rid of them.
Really if you think unions are worthless you only have to see what the average workers life was like before they existed.
The sad part is folks were fired, beaten up and murdered to get the basic benefits folks take for granted now. With unions gone corporations will have free hand to regress things and that is happening right now.

Ahh, so it's kind of like our version of Whose Line...! Welcome to the Conversation, where everything's made up and the points don't matter.

Thanked: 1371I've worked for small businesses and large corporations.
I have had union jobs and non-union jobs.
I never felt mistreated by a corporation. I have felt mistreated by a small business.
Both unions I was in (SEIU and USW) took dues from my check, and did nothing at all for me.
Specific examples?
I know of two companies locally that broke their unions (oh - and the beatings and death threats will come from the union when you try to get rid of them). In both cases the people working for the companies have reported earning more, and being more satisfied with their company.Last edited by HNSB; 06-09-2012 at 04:11 AM.
