The Texas economy might be fine, but could they bear the burden of having to pay off their share of the debt before they leave? Moreover, what's to say "America" will want or even buy the things it offers at the prices they get for them now?

It gets tricky really soon and the fact of the matter is all States are better off simply because they are a part of the union as it were lol .

    Default I'm In--Republic of Texas !!

I'm with you Texans. I think it's a workable plan. Though, I think I can better support the new Republic from sunny South Florida. I've got it all planned out for the defense of our new Republic.

Oh man I can't help myself... Generally speaking, you buy a company at 4 times it's revenue. Under that premise according to Wikipedia lol:

    Texas GDP - $1,208,ooo x1,000,000 = 1,208,000,000,000
    Texas GDP times 4 = 4,832,000,000,000

National Debt per individual American = about 50K times 26M Texans = 1,300,000,000,000

Divide GDP x 4 by the debt Texas owes to America and... That's about 3.71... not bad! Assuming everyone in Texas stays in Texas after the split.

Default The New Republic of Texas?

The article on Wikipedia addressing the economy of Texas is quite informative; I did not really expect it to be so diverse.

Having said that, there are still many concerns with the state trying to secede. While the agriculture industry may be relatively unaffected, consider the effects to every other industry. The wiki lists the following as Texas's primary economic industries:

Agriculture: I mentioned above this would likely continue to thrive.

Energy production: While seceding would not reduce the availability/quantity of natural resources available, outside funding would shrivel. This would pose a challenge to the continual health of the exploration side of the equation as it is heavily dependent on equity/debt funding - both of which would be unavailable if the state left the union. (Yes foreign companies can list on our exchange, but they have to be approved by the SEC and in a rebellion situation they wouldn't get it. Same goes for bank loans when the government embargoes Texas).

(Defense) Manufacturing: The defense manufacturing is funded by government contracts. If Texas leaves the union, all those monies disappear. Fast. No more research funding to allow you to stay on top for exporting to foreign countries either. As for other manufacturing, where are you going to source raw materials, and with what will you pay foreign countries? You sure wouldn't be allowed to print USDs and with the current (global) economic instability, I doubt there would be many willing to accept a new currency - especially one condemned by the US.

Information Technology: While I don't know the specifics of who you provide IT to, I'd imagine a non-trivial percentage is for the US. Think you'd still get to do IT for the country you just left?

Biomedical Research: This would be supported partially by Texas's institutions of higher education, (new) government, and wealthy citizens - provided they did not leave before secession - for a while. But remember the US federal government provides a large percentage of research funding...and that would be gone too. Also, a significant portion of this research is undertaken at NASAs request: do you think NASA would still be there if you left the US?

Considering the port of Houston is essential to the US, we would be hard pressed to let that go... Just another point.

I could go on, but given these concerns (and those not presented) this is just a terrible idea. I know many on here are just "dreaming for a utopian Texas" but I live in Arkansas and I'm sick and tired of people talking about this like it is a great idea; let alone that it is feasible.

In any case, dream on! Just remember its not possible

A good read would be here: Economy of Texas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As you can see, with trade (the key), Texas could make it financially. It makes enough power, petroleum, agricultural & has enough manufacturing to get along well. Could it defend itself without the federal military bases? Good question...it is a very large defense manufacturer.

This kind of talk comes up time and again & is simply a pipedream as I mentioned before. Last time I checked, unless there is a new modification of the modification of the modification (I could go on) of the Constitution/law, I'm still allowed to dream. Who knows, I'm sure there is some law in the Patriot Act that I've broken...
But you would have to - the income of texas that's from the feds having stuff made. Cause you can bet that spending would be moved else where.

I know people that came to America to escape civil war. Their description of civil war is not quite as romantic as all if yours.

But this is just sour grapes. Waaahhh. Our guy didn't win. Lets do everything we can to ruin this country jus to prove a point.

All this talk about Texas leaving the union, I never thought Texas was really part of the U.S to begin with.

The first thing they would have to do is give up a big chunk of their territory they stole from New Mexico.

Then when Mexico invades they will really be in a kettle of fish.

Now, I just got an idea! Remember from Texas v White that our union is perpetual and we can't leave? There is an exception: all the states have to vote you off the island, so to speak.

So if you really want out, just send out "ambassadors" to each state and really start pissing people off in the name of Texas. After a while I'm sure you could muster up some votes to free yourselves!
