Kids in our day weren't that smart.

That is sad. I remember I worked for a contractor once. I was not really adept at the work but I did try my best. I saw him years later in a bar. He asked if I wanted to come back to work for him. He stated that I might have been awful but I did try to learn the trade. Apparently the kids he was working with were not even trying anymore.
Anyway, despite that experience, I do think that every generation has bad apples. So based on simple math we just have more bad apples because our population has exploded. Of course, that is a very simplistic interpretation. But why should I believe that our morals and values are going down the tube? I am really not into believing in that 'greatest generation' nonsense. There were bad apples amongst them too.
I think we need stereotypes, such as 'children these days are (fill in the blank), to help us cope with disappointment or maybe just a sore back. They provide us insight when none can be given or at least seen. The severity and complexity of any issue is perplexing. Otherwise, our minds would otherwise reel and teeter on edge of insanity.
In the end, I wait for the day when I can be the grumpy old guy. I guess in some ways I am there already. My nephew reminds me of that every chance he gets. Grumble. Grumble.

Thanked: 2027So what do's that tell you Glen about todays kids??
I hired a young Kid today from the home depot parking lot to pull weeds,he was maybe 17,clean cut hispanic,he said he would be here at Noon,he was,He said he would work for $8/hr (I paid him $10) I set out a cooler with bottled water and softdrinks (104degs in the sun today) my wife made him a sandwhich and some chips,he was overly greatfull.
He did a fantastic Job,he asked if I might have more work in the future,we struck a deal for the fall.
Was he legal? did he have a green card? not on a bet,he will be here tues oct.1st without fail I am certain.
Because he needs work to help his family, cannot find any anglo kids that will do what he did, they have no work ethics

my son is 16 years old and my daughter is 14 they are both very responsible, because we expect that out of them. If my kids say they will be some where they will find a way to get there on time even if they have to walk. Before blaming the kids take a look at the parents. it's sad but there a lot of irresponsible parents out there raising irresponsible kids. But there are also some good parents raising good responsible kids. I think it's unfair to make a blanket statement that all kids are irresponsible just because a few are.

I do not think that is fair pixelfixed; American kids don't lack work ethic they lack motivation and above all necessity.

Thanked: 375I'm 40, although I work with guys 20 years older, i also work with guys 15 years younger. It's interesting to see the different views they each have. knowledge, vs. experience? Youth do not have the experience, but they do have knowledge, the knowledge is just different from what you know. I'm smart enough to know that experience can add to my knowledge and knowledge can add to my experience. We reap the seeds we sow
And from this thread, you would think that there was a lot of bad planting going on
Not trying to start anything or be a smarta$$ just saying........CHRIS
