Yes, I tape the spine when using the hones. Yes I do think the mild steel would wear faster than the hardened blade, (if I didn't tape the spine)
I am not a big one for taping the spines, but that is the price I pay for the patina finish and using mild steel. I tend to tape the spines on my most valued razors so it is not that big of a deal to me.
Good points

Thanks for the clarification. I have no problem with taping a spine, and your design certainly looks to benefit from that method.

Chris,
Sorry if I came across as being defensive or snippy.

Here is the link of how I built the razor.

Thanked: 346Have you given any thought to chroming the frame piece like so many of the vintage framebacks? This lets you use a mild steel frame without worrying about hone wear, since the chromium is so hard and abrasion-resistant.

Thanked: 995I got to physically handle that razor last evening and a fine piece it is. Some surprises were in store for Charlie and I leave those for him to tell.
I am a fan of muted looks, as opposed to very shiny, glare and flare, and this frameback was both simple and attractive to my eye in that way. I'd not been exposed to any original FB's before and seeing a custom was well worth it to me.
Keep up the good work Charlie.
