you can own a gun but it needs to be stored in a gun safe and you need a permit from the police or be a member of a gun club. i dont think you can carry a gun but im not 100% sure.

First up, Thanks BuddyRockefella. They were going to run with an older, already printed article I wrote for them some time back, and I was asked if I could re-submit it with photographs of other knives I had made since the article was first put to print. I did that, and in a 'phone conversation with the Publisher, I mentioned that I had written something on my shaving history on this forum with regards cut-throats. They asked if I would like to submit that as well, and I was pleased to see something fresh and new from my own hand put into print once again. I was also pleased to be told that "..You write very well, you know!". It's inspiring to be told that from someone who you've never met. It isn't quite the same as hearing it from friends and family.

    Next, Gun laws...

Licencing laws are strict and there are a lot of stipulations as to what you can and can't do. Licences are broken into different classes as well. So if I have a licence that allows me to own a shotgun, I can't go out and buy a 30.06 as that comes under a high power weapons class. If I have a licence that allows me to have that Remington Pump action 30.06, the IAC 12G Lever action shotgun with 20" barrel, it doesn't mean I can go out and buy a Ruger Mini 14 because that is a semi auto, and in the the eyes of our well educated police and politicians, semi auto's are far too deadly a weapon to allow an honest citizen to own, unless they meet an even stricter requirement.
All of these and more are available to any criminal in the country, but that's not the point.
Handguns are another licence altogether, and there are restrictions as to how heavy a calibre you can own with them as well as minimum barrel length allowable. There is no CCP in this country, you cannot carry anything on you that could be construed as a weapon, so that short rod of metal attached to your car keys has got to go too.
Firearms can be carried to and from the premises of storage, to the vehicle where they must be locked in a secure storage fixed to the vehicle and to the gunsmith, range or property that they're going to be used on. Bolts, magazines and ammunition are to be stored separately or in a part of a gun safe seperated from and designed for the purpose of said storage.
Your short answer is, Yes there are. And Yes to the shotgun/rifle and No to the pistol.
    Sucks doesn't it?!

No! A firearm can be kept in the house only if it is in an approved safe of some kind, and must be kept seperate from the ammuntion. When these laws first came in, there was a marked increase in crimes such as break and enter. In general though, there has been no reduction in crimes where a firearm has been used, suicides haven't dropped, nothing that was said would happen, has happened.
The people in power are now trying to stop the blackmarketing of weapons and weapon parts by bringing in tougher border controls. It won't be long before we need a passport to leave our own state of abode.
You don't live in the wild west, we are the ones who live in a soft form of dictatorship...A Nanny state where the people must be protected from themselves.
Not hard to do in this country as we have two classes of people here, the majority that live in cities, see any form of firearm or knife as an evil murdering tool, and the minority that live in the country and know that guns and knives are tools to be used and respected.
Guess who has the biggest vote! Not that it would matter really, as the politicians do as they please, but the voice of protest is easy to drown out with those odds.

Speaking of Aus firearms laws . I remember the day after the "Port Arthur Massacre" ,or maybe after they banned semi autos, there was a bunch of firearms related crimes all carried out using handguns which is ludicrous considering how strict our handgun laws are.
It's kinda the old saying "When they outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns"
