Thread: Homemade leather bags.

I'll make one a bit smaller for myself next time. Now that I have an idea of how to go about making one, it shouldn't be too hard. I might even use some nicer leather. I think you're right. These things could multiply .

Well it isn't really a bag as such, but I made myself a case for my new mobile 'phone yesterday. Just used some scrap leather from past projects and some new fittings. The belt clip and the magnetic press clip. The leather I used was some chrome tanned 'roo hide that you see as the main outer covering, with veg tanned 'roo hide as the trim around the edges and across the opening. Under that is some 2mm cow hide to give a bit more thickness for protection. The whole thing has been hand stitched as usual.
This didn't turn out too badly for a late afternoon knock up. I refused to pay for one of those crappy cases they said I had to buy if I wanted one. And Telstra wouldn't throw one in to the deal unless I bought the extra warranty they were trying to flog off. And at an extra $8 a month over 24 months, there was no way that was going to work out as a fair deal, even with any of the other (no good to me as a motorcyclist) things like blue tooth ear piece or in car charger thrown in, it would work out cheaper, in the long haul, to just buy the stuff as extra's.
You would think with these things that a case would be a mandatory addition, as they are all pretty fragile when it comes to falling from tables and out of pockets etc., and since the 'Otterbox' case I really wanted wasn't sold by them, and was out of my reach where it was, I settled for a lesser 'Otterbox' case just down from the one I wanted, and made the following case instead. Still not as good as the 'Otterbox Defender' of course, but it will do for me.

I like the idea that you used a snap to shut it instead of velcro.

I like the internet in that I can "meet" people like you....But not in person. I wish that you were my neighbor!

It's a magnetic press clip much like what you might find on a ladies handbag. It aligns and clips itself into place with a sure sounding click. No pressure or pressing required. There is nothing that touches the screen of the 'phone, as all metallic parts are covered with a layer of leather (it took some thunking in ma head to work my way around that).

You don't want to meet me in person, but you wish I was your neighbour. You have me confused mate......Actually I think I know what you really mean, but I couldn't resist having a go at ya anyway. You're saying I might be a useful bloke to have around sometimes, but just not to have around when you have company over for dinner...

Agreed, Velcro is not the end all be all.

I am also opposed to the use of Velcro. I like my things made to last and preferably out of natural materials. I figure, when this 'phone has long been relinquished to the great recycling plant in the sky, this pouch will have found other uses for itself .

Was just having that very discussion with a friend tonight. Lamenting the price of wool and it's wonderful qualities and how this fleece stuff is touted as being the new wool...........somehow it's just not quite the same.
