Side pockets might just fit a can of beer, given that there will be a certain degree of movement from the sides of the bag inwards and a little from the side pocket in the outwards direction. I did semi plan for that to be the case anyway.

Mate you can just throw 'roo hide through the wife's sewing machine. piece of p...You know what I mean. I've slapped up a few 'roo hide cases for individual razors quick and simple and ran them through the Janome. Much faster, trust me. Anyway I reckon my glue is nearly dry. Almost time to do some stitch and sew I front of the TV...Might have dinner first though.

Mick, how abouts sewing a couple of short straps to the bag so that you could secure a knife sheath to the outside if you wanted. I thought 2 vertical straps with buckles.

Oh I make leather bags constantly, and without ceasing.
Good on you though, I'll be interested to see how it turns out.
My satchel is a re-purposed Swiss bread bag, used to carry rations I believe; I use it for bouldering and for going to the markets (to hold croissants, cheese and wine, but it'd be nice to have a leather bag made from scratch.
    Is that roo leather?

Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Mate if I can do it, and I did, with no prior knowledge you should be able to. Just go slow. Don't floor it!

Thought about that too. Figured that's what my belt is for. Thanks for the thought though.

I looked at some ex-mil bags as a replacement to my current bag when I was in the 'just buy one phase' of my search. It was seeing the prices of old army crap that I decided it would be easier/cheaper to just make one. Well it's proving neither easy nor cheap. But it could have been both, until my imagination started running away with designs and absolute necessities that just had to be added. Lots of fiddling around.

The hide is just a third grade side of cow hide. I bought it years ago for some project that never eventuated. I don't even remember what it was anymore. It's crappy leather, which is why I was always going to go rough and ready...And simple. Just in case it didn't work out or doesn't last as long as better leather would. I made that Pirate hat you've seen out of the same kind of leather though, so maybe it'll be fine 'til the next idea for a bag comes along...Maybe one in 'roo hide like I always wanted...

So you gonna be roo hunting when you are next on the farm, there seem to be a lot of folks interested in having leather stuff made all of a sudden, perhaps you need to change your signature to "not for hire or reward" .
I looked at the price of leather today for something to do, it seems.to be quite pricey, well not all, I saw some for around $5 per square foot.
What makes the leather you have more likely to fall apart/wear out quickly, is it thin or something, just trying to understand.

Horizontal like PALS webbing would work better.

I was thinking the knife would be horizontal, with one strap going through the belt loop on the sheath and one somewhere near the end. But yes you would be right if the knife were to be vertical. Or it could be installed on the strap, though that might be less practical.
