I shoot corked as often as possible.
It was a great opening weekend.
Muzzle loaders are big fun. Highly recommend blackhorn209 over any other powder. More energy and non hydroscopic."We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."

Turkey hunting with a rifle? Laws must be a bit different down there.

yup they vary all over the country. much harder then with a shotgun also. must use a centerfire rifle and clearly needs to be a head/neck shot or its a worthless bird. I was happy with my 100 yard neck shot! later on in the spring I usually do shotgun hunts also. I much prefer the head/neck rifle shot though. less wasted meat or wounded birds and its much more difficult.

I am not deer hunting for this season. My buddy and I normally do two hunt/camping trips during archery season and this week I camped with him while he hunted. We camped on the edge of a pasture on his family's farm.
The first afternoon we set up camp and showed off new gear. My buddy has been restoring two axes he found. I took a pic of them along with my hatchet. Late in the afternoon I stayed in camp while my buddy went to the wood lot and bow hunted. I saw a doe trot right past our camp around 4PM when I was on the hill above our camp taking in the scenery. My friend saw several deer and some turkeys at last light. That evening we sat around the fire and cooked T-bone steaks.
I slept-in the next morning while my friend hunted. He saw two bucks fighting over a doe, and later passed on taking a shot on the loser of the fight. Later in the morning we fished some strip pits. The fishing was slow due to the cold snap earlier in the week. There was ice at the edges of the water. I caught three Largemouth Bass and considered that a success. Around noon we went back to camp and cooked steaks again. I showed my friend my straight razor and brush. He showed me his late grandfather's Gillette DE that he wanted to try out sometime. I had planned on shaving at camp but my face was pretty wind burnt by that time, so opted out. I gave my friend a tube of Bigelow shave cream and he gave me a sample of Bay Rum aftershave. We packed up camp after lunch. My friend walked to his stand to hunt while I hit the road.

I haven't had any luck putting down a deer yet this year. But I've had a lot of fun so far. The season isn't over yet. -John, bowhunting in Virginia.

Thanked: 31Well, sorry no pics. Always in a big hurry to skin and butcher to take pics. First was a whitetail doe with Remington 700 ADL .270. Second was a buck with AR 5.56 head shot. Full freezer. Kept heart and liver from buck, never cooked them before. Head shot is way to go. Nice clean gutting'. Happy hunting.

Thanked: 2027Head shot is always the best shot,Heart and liver are fantastic eats,my fav from any deer, but do not freeze it very long (month at the most)
Fry up some bacon, slice up the heart (remove the valves and muscle tissue) thinly slice the liver, wash it well, dredge all in flour with fresh ground pepper, sautee some onys, toss all back into the hot bacon grease, mix all together and eat, great stuff.
