Hmm. Knife, ax, flask, and cigar. Looks like my kind of camping trip.
I have a pipe dream of spending a week canoeing in one of your Canadian parks.

Don't just dream it, do it.
I have spent far too much life wishing.
That's why we did it.
It's cheap to do and worth whatever you have to sacrifice to do it.
FYI, 36# is way too much pack for the Highland trail if you choose it. I would never again leave a campsite without at least 2 litres of water. Travel is difficult, we averaged 1.5 km/hour. YMMV

Setting up a trip with a few friends this fall to spend a long weekend on the Appalachian Trail. I will have to post some pictures when I am done. I make a point to get out and backpack a couple of times a year - usually early spring or late fall.

We were thinking of the AT so our Algonquin experience was to be our intro to backpacking.
We have decided that the AT at our age is a bit outside our capabilities.
We will however probably do Algonquin again on a bit smaller scale. I underestimated how important a water source is when hiking in 33*C weather.

Don't give up on the AT - even if you do a small section. You are about 7 hours from Dalton, Massachusetts. A lot of times you can find an outfitter or someone that will drive you out to a trail head and drop you off and you hike back to town. That is what I have done in the past so you don't have to jockey a vehicle around. If you are up for a 2-3 day trip you can stay in the huts and skip the tent.

Just got back from a short camping trip in the Superior National forest in northern MN.
It was very quiet, to quiet. An interesting observation by my wife was that when we got home to St Paul we could hear many more birds and bugs in the inner city than we could in the forest.
Very pretty up north but it seems to be a relatively dead ecosystem.

Nice country up in northern MN. I've done some canoeing in Boundary Waters and camping in Grand Marais area.

My boy and I try to get out at least once a month provided it's not too cold or too hot for him.
