How'd you do the radio? I've got that stupid stock one that's the whole radio/AC/Fan all in one. I was thinking about getting a typical cd player receiver unit and putting it in the change tray area under the middle vents, then fabricating a special tray unit to put in place of the old radio. My speakers are crackling from all my jamming and I have to hit the radio for it to work
My tranny is just dying from old age. My spacers are dead (the stick will wobble on its own), syncros are almost all dead, one of the shifting forks are bent, and it's just plain rough. To make things worse, I thought I felt my throwout bearing the last few times I drove it. As much as I know it needs it, it's hard to take it to the shop and be $1000ish lighter when I leave
My wish list for the thing is a mile long.
*Radio
*Bucket Seats
*Shocks
*Paintjob
*Seatbelts
*Insulation for noise
*Catalytic converter "taken care of"
*Steering wheel
*Windshield
*Tires
*Rear bumper
*Gauge cluster
Everything on that list except for the tires is stock. Once I get the windshield taken care of- the snowstorm made that a priority, and the transmission done, I'll be taking it for the cat work. I know a guy that does a good job on those.
What's funny is my missus keeps telling me it's not worth it, but she just doesn't understand what it means for a truck like that to be able to haul 10,000 lbs. I say "babe, it can haul ass and a tractor"...for some reason it doesn't impress her

Mine had the am/fm radio and cassette seperate. My suprervisors Grandson installed it in the back of the shop where I worked lol. He was working as an installer for Ultimate Electronics at the time.
The pic isn't very good, but you can kind of see the setup. The small blue screen above the climate control is my ham radio faceplate which is set into a pocket (you can buy those to fill in where the origional radio went. The stereo is where the origional cassette player was.
I understand about not getting rid of it. I'm the 2nd owner on mine and I'm not selling it. Soon they'll be classics.
I made the mistake of selling my first pickup (55 Chevy) and I've kicked myself since then. This one has a special meaning to me. I was laid off in 92, lost my left eye and couldn't work, so my new Dodge was repo'd. When I was able to go back to work, my employer had this one up for sale. The company is no longer around, but the truck will be around for a good long time.Last edited by freebird; 03-31-2008 at 06:12 PM.

That's exactly what I want to do with mine! It's exciting to see someone that's actually done it. Do you have bench or bucket seats?
It's true, they'll be classics before long. Hopefully when they're recognized as being classics mine will look and run the part

Unfortunately I have bench seats. My truck was a base model, no carpet, bucket seats, hubcaps lol. So far I've added Chevrolet Rallye wheels, tinted the windows (as dark as OK will allow) and dual exhaust (had single on it).
How is your a/c? Mine is weak, makes driving in OK summers a hot proposition, 2-70 a/c.....2 windows down and 70 mph.Last edited by freebird; 03-31-2008 at 09:48 PM.

Mine is kind of a weird one. It was a custom ordered Scottsdale- lowest of the Scottsdale, Cheyenne, Silverado family- with a towing package. It has dual exhaust stock, but no buckets or carpet either. EDIT: I forgot to say that it was a custom order that the original buyer decided he didn't want. Go me!
I don't remember the last time the AC worked. I think it quit in 95 or soI forgot to add AC to my list of things to do. That's the good thing about these older trucks though. No power windows to go out, so you'll never be entirely stifled by the dead AC
I hear the aftermarket conversion AC's are really good though.
As an aside, check out lmctruck.com for any parts you need. I haven't had/been able to order from them yet, but you can get pretty much anything you need for your truck through them. A client of mine referred me to them. He had the Silverado straight bed and replaced a ton of stock items through them. It looked great and he said their service was good.

I'll definitely check them out! Does your truck sit higher in the rear like mine? Most that I've seen around here sit lower than mine. When the company I worked for went under they had me and another fellow haul a bunch of stuff to the scrap yard, I think one load I had on mine weighed in at 1,500 lbs or a little less. Think I'll eventually lower mine, not too low as I live in the sticks lol. Not sure what color to have it painted when I get around to it, thought about the dark orange color that's out now, I want to stay in the same color family so I don't have to paint the dash lol.

Yup, mine sits noticeably higher in the rear like yours. I need to level it out, but it's one of those backburner items. Usually mine only hauls toys or people's crap that I'm moving, but I've rented a few bobcats (5000 lbs!) and even a dozer. I've been pretty impressed with it, that's for sure.
I hear ya about the dash- they're way too expensive to replace plus a pain in the ass in general. When I get mine painted (and it needs it bad), it'll be Victory Red. I think it's hot

I understand about being a backburner item lol. Too many other things that comes first....bills, razors, food, razors, you get the idea
The ONLY thing I don't like about my truck is filling the tank, it's got the 26 gallon tank and when it get's empty it hurts. I thought the 6 cyl and stick combo would get good mileage, but I average about 19 or 20 mpg.

Oh man, you got it. I about crapped myself after filling it the other day. Thankfully the missus has a car that gets pretty good mileage, so I don't have to drive mine much. I'm lucky if I get 15 mpg
EDIT: Oh, and my razor purchases have stopped too. I've put a hold on myself buying new stuff until I can hone well. Talk about a freakin' challenge!

One of Dad's friends passed away a few months ago and his wife called and gave him a couple of Buicks lol. Dad gave me my pick so I grabbed the 88 Park Ave, so I'm doing ok with gas, just hate not driving ol' browny.
I'm in the same boat, going to have to try to curb my rad & gaad (guitar accessories) for awhile till I can pick up some hones and learn how to use them. I know I've got enough soap to last for awhile.
