Thanked: 155The M actually just stands for model, not machine gun. My M1 is not and never has been a machine gun. Prior to the M1, US military rifles were identified by their model year (e.g. M1903). Military model numbers are reset on a regular basis (for example, the current US main battle tank is the M1 Abrams, it is not, however, the first main battle tank the US ever had).

Thanked: 586When I was in the Navy(77-81) the all military identifiers where broken down to mark and modification(mod). Therefore, the M stood for "mark". To use your example, the tank is the M1A1 (Mark 1 Mod A1) Abrams MBT. Coincidentally, my first job out of the Navy was with Avco Lycoming in Stratford, CT working in the R&D Stress Lab on the new engine for that tank. I guess I am old.

Thanked: 6I built one from parts and a Colt HBAR upper for match use (1:7, floater, Geiselle trigger, NM sights, weighs around 15lbs), but it hasn't seen much use. I'm trying to reach a few goals with my old M1A Supermatch before I commit to the dark side. I shot it at Camp Perry in the Rattle Battle, but that's about it.
I sense a few arfcom people here.
