If you could read it in the Greek, you'd learn an awful lot. How much? Well let's just say the further back you go, the more it changes from today's Authorised Version. That said I like the King James. It's lyricism at times exceeds the original. I would suggest you try the Quran & the Maharabat too. Similarly epic in scale & execution.

To those of you who read aloud to your partners - any suggestions especially for storytime? I got fed up with TV and disposed of ours, without really properly consulting my girlfriend/roommate. My penance is to read to her in the evenings, though of course we both love it.
I stand corrected. I haven't been around long enough or actively enough to have seen the many examples cited, but I guess it doesn't surprise me that a hobby as idiosyncratic as this could attract a different, and perhaps better, sort. Apologies and thanks to those who set me straight.Last edited by NeitherMightier; 06-21-2008 at 12:36 AM.

Right now I'm reading H.P. Lovecraft, a book on coagulant and flocculant theory, plus my usual rotations through Tolkien and whatever my wife happens to leave next to the toilet (right now it's... one of my Lovecraft book).
I also like folklore and fairy tales. I've got books on Chinese, Celtic and Iraqi folk stories. Also have a book about Native American legends about the mountains of the Pacific Northwest US. The Chinese Monkey King stories are always fun.
I'm fascinated by creation legends also. Looking for a good book on that.
I spent a year reading the Rubiyaat (sp?) of Omar Khyaam. Good book but Arabic poetry requires some thinking if you aren't used to it.
Just finished a book called "Peace be Upon You" that examines Jewish-Christian-Muslim relations over the past 1400 years. Quite interesting.
I've read most of Ayn Rand. "We The Living" and "Anthem" are my favorites. Atlas Shrugged draws you in while being a bit tedious at the same time.
