If you are looking for a bird dog, I can not recommend a breed more than I can recommend a German Shorthair Pointer. Unsurpassed for upland birds like grouse, pheasants, and quail. Also very capable for ducks in all but the roughest of waters. (I had a bit of an adventure when my pup decided to retrieve a live Canada goose from the Hudson River, and the goose just decided to stand his ground.)

I have hunted with the German shorthairs.
Like most pointers, they are extremely enthusiastic. Spent many hours trying to find the buggers! Seemed single-minded.

A friend had a pair of Springer Spaniels. Nice and obedient. Great for upland stuff.
They were also his and his wife's 'children'. Great pets as well.

My old girl would focus on the task at hand and would be focused like a laser. I never had a more intelligent dog, nor a more obedient one. Wouldnt chase deer or cats! Buzz only had a few things that she knew, Hunt em up, Come, and Drop. She would shake hands, but I never thought teaching a dog to do tricks was a very worthwhile endeavor for me or the pup. Being mostly a grouse dog, she always stayed within about 50 yards of me, so I never had to go looking for her in 15 years. Maybe one day I will try another GSP, but I doubt it would measure up to my old girl.

A friend has one. He has invested thousands in training. The thing is so worked-up by the time we drop the tailgate and let it out, it takes-off like a streak.
He put a shock-collar on it once. Funniest thing ever. Dog would jump and keep on running.
He was out of range pretty fast.
After he got some energy out he did quite well. Love to see dogs working in the field. Nothing else like it, IMO.

Concensus in Scotland at least is labrador retrievers. They cope well with the combination of rough water and freezing temperatures.

Spaniels are by all accounts good on land, but siffer badly from the cold.

Big plus, that! My wife's little farts keep me in allergy-land!
Getting old. The dogs AND the dander...
My turn to pick the frigging dog! I want a real dog!
    That one has personality.
