I have some experience with American whiskeys. Nothing fancy. I tend to stick to old no 7 most days, if I drink at all. On the rocks, if possible. But I have ventured out and tried jim beam before. I liked jack better. I have been known to drink old timer from time to time. Johnny walker black label was the most recent and it was pretty smooth. I got through 3/4 of that bottle before it was all said and done. I would have liked something with more of a kick. I found jameson good, but somewhat lighter than jack. And wild turkey 1o1 was all right, but I can't remember if it was good or not. I hear stories that I might have caught a raccoon with my bare hands that night.

Thanked: 235I don't know what a good whiskey is, but I can tell you to stay away from anything introduced to you as Thai whiskey. I think it is just paint thinner with a little food colouring added.

Lagavulin really is my favorite, although I'm not turning down a nice glass of Glenrothes either
And believe it or not, Dutch Millstone is not bad either.....
Lagavulin is particularly nice in combination with some chuncks of old Dutch cheese!

I usually stick with BlackJack, although I recently tried Makers Mark and enjoyed that immensely.
after reading all these posts I have a list of 5 or 6 more I feel called to sample. Thanks, Gents!

We had just been dating for a week when we stopped into a neighbourhood pub for a quick drink. I was trying to play the gentleman and began to scope the room for a table when I heard her say, "Shall we just sit at the bar"? from behind me. And as we sat down she gazes across the bar to the single malts and coos, "Ooo, Oban". I knew then it would be interesting.

I just found my new favorite Bourbon, Vintage Bourbon 17 year. I highly recommend it. Price wasn't *too* bad, I think in the $50 range.
Here's what I'm drinking...this week:

Thanked: 235Does anyone know if you can still buy Vat69? I found an old bottle left over from my grandfather's stuff and it was delicious. I don't know if that was because it was a good whiskey, or because it was so old.

Thanked: 346I'm a sucker for all the Islays, but am particularly fond of Laphroaig, especially the Laphroaig cask strength - it's actually smoother than the standard Laphroaig, which I suspect means that the water on Islay is probably pretty nasty stuff...
Highland Park 18 is another favorite, not as peaty but still smoky with a bit of sweetness. very well balanced.
Buffalo Trace is great stuff, probably my favorite bourbon ATM.
Sazerac Rye is probably my favorite rye, when I can find it (Spec's has been pretty good lately though). Mix with a bit of sugar, Peychaud's Bitters, and (recently legalized) Absinthe.

Earlier this week I went over to the liquor store to look around, and ended out picking up a bottle of Jon, Mark, and Robbo's "The Rich Spicy One." I don't really know anything about whisky (Scotch, that is), but I really like this stuff. Has anyone else had it? Care to share your thoughts? It was about $30 for a 750ml bottle.

Thanked: 234My favorite whiskey is Glenmorangie. 10 year old single malt.
Fantastic stuff. I only really enjoy single malts, not a fan of blended whiskey.
Do enjoy the odd bourbon, obviously JD is the most prevelant but Jim Bean is good as well.
