Thanked: 14It would be a shame to let such a good thread die! Right now I'm working on a bottle of Buffalo Trace, which I think is exceptional at the $30 price point. I just finished a bottle of Russell's Reserve, which is not quite so exceptional. And I like Evan William's Single Barrel (10 Years), especially if you can get the lot released in 2006.
Good stuff!

Am man after my own heart....or bottle. You just hit on all of my favorites. Buffalo Trace has become my house bourbon for general imbibing. makes an excellent mint Julep. I keep a barrel of mint growing for just that purpose.
and then there's scotch, but that's another thread, I'm sure.

Ahhh... a group of gentlemen after my own heart! There are so many to choose from, but I'd have to say that my favorite is Booker Noe's 127-proof rocket fuel - 3 ice cubes, if you please. Knob is always a stand-by, though. I've had a sip of pappy's 20-year old, but I've not been able to find it locally. Veeery nice bourbon!

May I ask a dumb question ..... (because I don't know)?
What "mint" of choice do you use for that drink? Peppermint? Spearmint? What kind?
I ask because I have never made a mint Julep. I have two kinds of mint in the garden right now and am getting thirsty reading this thread.

Thanked: 1195Someone dug up this gem of a thread, eh?
Since I wrote the above I picked up a bottle of Woodford Reserve at the airport duty free in Puerto Vallarta a couple months back, and all I can say is wow! Such flavor bursting forth, such a smooth finish. I think I'll give WR a slight edge over the Rare Breed.

Black Label Beam with dry gingerale for day to day.
Booker Noes, Makers Mark and Old Grandad for more special occasions - on the rocks of course!

Spearmint. Recipe as follows:
Place 10 spearmint leaves in the bottom of a glass and add teaspoon of sugar. Muddle until the mint is obliterated into a fine paste. I use the rounded end of an ice cream scoop for this. you can buy rounded hardwood sticks called "muddlers" that look like little baseball bats as well. Once muddled, add a splash of water and swirl to dissolve into a green gook. Top with ice, then bourbon. Add another splash of water and a sprig of mint to garnish. Savor on a hot summer day. repeat.

I won't argue that the best stuff doesn't comes from KY, but it doesn't have to.
As for my favorite, definitley Bulleit (which is from KY).
