Range day, not too long ago with the often over looked Win Mod 70 .25-06 and handloads. I don’t think it really caught on, not like say a .243. Shoots flat and hits hard. If the .30-06 and .270 ever had a kid…

Never had the chance to chase hogs, not many, if any where I live. Very surprised they haven’t crept back in through the Pecos water basin into NM.
Read an article about a hunt. A hunter took a shot at a boar with a .308, destroying its front shoulder. But not killing it. It charged him with 3 legs. A lot of stitches later..
As previously stated, shot placement.

Nah. You don't need a cannon just a good shot. I hear that all the time but you just...don't. My dad always used a .22. I shot one trotting toward me with my .270 and it flipped him over backwards. Might have been 150gr but I'm pretty sure it was 130gr as that's what my Savage Model 111 likes best.
Tell you what though, that SOB stunk to high heaven. I got home and walked in the front door. From across the house I hear my wife yell, "PEW!!!!” She made me go outside to change my clothes. I couldn't blame her though because I could hardly dress that joker he smelled so bad and I've dressed out a LOT of animals in my day. It was like make the skunks hold their nose kind of S-T-A-N-K! That's the best pork I ever ate though.
EDIT: If you want to hunt hogs come to Florida. They have become a nuisance of epic proportion. We have so many here the state is practically begging people to come hunt them. There is no age limit, size limit, sex limit, bag limit, no time (day or night) limit, you can bait them without a year around program. You can even shoot suckling piglets. Hell, there's not even a season limit. As long as you are on private property you can hunt them year around even at night with lights without so much as a hunting license EVEN IF YOU ARE FROM OUT OF STATE.Last edited by PaulFLUS; 09-03-2023 at 04:38 AM.

You guys have some monsters running around over there. I used to work for a company that was based in Gainesville. The CEO used to show me pictures of hogs he harvested.

Thanked: 0I would think a deep penetrating low recoiling round like the 6mm ARC would be optimal for wild boar/pigs. They can be mean. When we were kids they would sometimes chase us and we'd seek shelter up a tree or something. Often, our parents would hear us yelling and open the gate as we came streaming in from the pigs chasing us. Some of them can grow some mighty big tusks, sometimes curving back.

Yes there are big'uns here but the biggest issue is just how many of them there are. Florida is one of 4 or 5 states that are infested to epidemic numbers. My friend in the hunt club got game camera pictures of herds so big you couldn't count them all. In some parts the forest floor looks like it was roto-tillered.
When I go out in suckling season (which is really the only time they are dangerous) I carry my 9mm with self defense rounds in my belt holster. 10+1 and even with quick shooting I figure that's all good. Plus I carry a spare clip too.Last edited by PaulFLUS; 09-08-2023 at 01:07 AM.
