Thanked: 586Flylot,
Thanks for the pics! If you read my story in the first post of this thread you know I am a fedora guy too. While it has been impossible for me to buy a replacement for my grandfather's black beaver fedora, I think I have gotten myself past the emotional blockade so now I have only to scrape up the bucks and settle on a brim. I took the boss into New Haven a couple weeks ago to look at fedoras. We both liked a Borsalino Trilby. But money is way too tight for now to justify such a purchase.

Thanked: 39May I suggest a place to lurk: The Fedora Lounge - Powered by vBulletin
Also, the two best custom houses in the US (IMO) are Art Fawcett:
VS Custom Hats
and the lads in Chicago: Optimo Hat Company
They could reproduce anything you want, give them approx dimensions (brim width, crown height, they will measure your hat size)of your missing hat and perhaps a drawing, it may be well worth the expense and peace of mind. I understand the economics, but the wait will be worth it. Perhaps later you can indulge in this.
Being from Texas, the ONE thing you don't do is mess with a man's hat! It could (and has) led to gun play! (some people just need killin'). There is nothing lower than someone knowingly destroying something of emotional value that belongs to someone else. The loss is so psychically damaging that it can scar you for life. My heart goes out to you, my lad. I am truly sorry for your loss. What happened is truly evil.

Thanked: 39Stubear, c'mon my boy, where is your bowler? The quintessential English Gentleman must sport a Saville Row suit and a bowler. I thought it was the law.....

Thanked: 369I have 3 (was 4) fedoras I inherited from my late grandfather.
A bit of advice - If you ever decide to send your hats for service/ cleaning, be sure to document your property. About 2 years ago I sent all 4 hats to "Mike the Hatter" in Cleveland (seemed reputable based on reviews and I could find no hat repair service in southern California) for cleaning and resizing (my head is a bit bigger than gramp's). 4 hats were returned, but one was a stranger. Somehow my vintage Dobb's 20 beaver fedora was misplaced, or stolen, and another, lesser quality Dobb's impostor, was sent in it's place. Despite several communications with "Mike the Hatter", my hat has never been returned. Needless to say, but I'll say it anyways, I'll never use that hat shop again
Fortunately my vintage Cavanagh, Resistol, and Mossant fedoras all made it back safe and sound (I did dispute the credit card charges for servicing those hats - no sense in rewarding a business for loosing an irreplaceable heirloom).Last edited by honedright; 01-30-2010 at 05:17 PM.
