Thread: What cigar did you smoke today?

The Sunday Stogie this week is a Flor De Oliva Churchill Maduro.
7 x 50 from Nicaragua

As I'm still fairly new to the cigar world, I tend to poke around a lot just to see where I am with cigars. You know, trying to figure out my cigar identity, what do I like, what doesn't agree with me etc. If you ask me these questions about pipes and pipe tobacco I could provide volumes of definitive answers as I've been a pipe guy for all my adult life and a couple years of my childhood. Not so with the stogies though.

Yeah, I know the Flor de Oliva is not a particularly high brow cigar but it was an easy and available way to check out the maduro wrapper so I took it. How did it do? I'd say it did quite well. My observations:

• Perhaps this is the difference between "Mild to Medium" that I'm used to and "Medium to Full" which the FDO is rated but this one made me pretty relaxed. I wasn't dizzy or nauseated but I could feel that this one had some wollop to it. For me at least, evening is a good time for this cigar.
• The construction was remarkable, not too loose, not too tight, the wrapper looked good too with not too many veins and no stems or sticks evident
• It had a nice full, "french roast coffee" sort of a quality about it, very tasty, very enjoyable.
• It burned slowly and produced a nice pale gray (off white) ash.
• The only thing I would ding this stogie on is burn, it wasn't particularly even but other than that it was a good smoke. Although I'm not sure I'd smoke one of these first thing in the morning. Perhaps my go to Sumatra wrappers should stay in that role.

Overall, yes, I would probably pack a few of these in the humidor for that end of the evening before bed smoke.

If you like maduros you might like this one I had recently: A. Turrent Triple Play Puros Maduro Robusto. Tried it on a whim and found it to be especially mild and smooth, but with some really great flavor to it. But unfortunately it isn't the cheapest cigar out there.

I must say Oliva Series V's are one of my most pleasurable cigars. And they burn quite well. If you liked you little soiree into med/full you owe it to yourself to give the V a turn!

PS should you like more of an all day long med. smoke give the Macanudo Grand Cru a whirl. at 6.15 a stick shes a great dance partner.

I agree 100% the Oliva Series V is a great smoke. I really enjoy all of Oliva's cigars. My current favorite maduro is probably the Nub Maduro, its also made by Oliva. Some other maduro's I really enjoy: 5 Vegas series A, Onyx, La Flor Dominicana Gran Maduro, CAO Gold Maduro, Carlos Torano Casa Torano Maduro, Romeo Julieta Reserve Maduro, Partagas Black Label, Punch Maduro, just to name a few.

This evening, I celebrated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' glorious victory over the Minnesota Vikings with a La Gloria Cubana Churchill Maduro. My thoughts

• This is an amazing smoke, the construction is fantastic, the taste is amazing and there's not one bad thing I can say about this other than
• This is a dangerous stick. Like the Aroma de Cuba, it gives even the casual cigar hero a glimpse at how good cigars can be. It is an upscale smoke and I certainly couldn't afford to smoke a lot of them but, WOW! this was fantastic. If I could afford to smoke 3 or 4 of these a day, I certainly would but for now at least they'll have to be an occassional treat.

That is one of my all time favorite brands. And that right there is my Second favorite. I really love the Serie R perfectos.

Well since it's my first homecoming in college and it also happens to be the 100th homecoming here at Mizzou. I think I should celebrate with something special. I'm debating a montecristo,or opus x. Any thoughts or suggestions.

Smoking this for lunch today. I think 50+ years of aging is enough.
