I think and its just a guess, maybe it has something to do with the popularity of 9mm filter pipes in Europe many of the artisan brands like Jacopo and Castello have a more limited range when it comes to crafting those pipes. The US market I sense favors filterless designs.

Pipe while walking the doggies. At the old ruins of an old castle at tthe nearby woods. It dates back to 1500 or so. McConnell Mature flakes from Hardcastle.

Not pipe related but noticed some weird creatures at surroundings. Guess they have been there for a while. Have no idea who made them. Maybe kids.

And the lucky shot of an evening's swan.

I guess US folks have more open mind with the artistic shapes and of course it's a huge marketing area as well.
Not so much with filters. There must be big variations between European countries, most folks i know here do not use filters. And the same goes with those Estonian, Danish and Swedish pipe smokers i've met.
Of course markets in Estonia and Finland are small but much bigger in Sweden and Denmark.

Your correct sailor. I was thinking more of the German market and shouldn't generalize.

No surprise at this but I have discovered tongue bite and probably an advanced case at that. Enjoying a bowl of Haunted Bookshop yesterday early and a few hours later two large bowls of straight burley (Five Brothers) left my tongue stinging at days end and quite red. This morning I noticed that my toothpaste really stung. I took a look and clearly had fisshured tongue. So no tobacco today and tomorrow I will see how things go.

I do realize that I am smoking some tobaccos to fast and drawing to hard when relighting with my pipe zippo. I think I will switch to cigar matches and have a good striker handy. I have to learn to slow down and sip my pipe.

It happens, but I have learned to keep moving the pipe around in my mouth so you dont keep hitting the same part of the tongue with hot smoke. It may be helpful to have a beverage like tea or water to sip on from time to time.

Might also be a packing issue. If it is too loose it will burn fast, if it is too tight/firm it will be hard to draw. I always knock out any ash/dottle and then blow through the stem/draught hole before I pack a pipe. If the blowing through feels at all restricted I do a pipe cleaner, and maybe more if necessary. I get the empty pipe drawing well before I pack.

I learned to pack from Richard Hacker's 'Ultimate Pipe Book.' I take a pinch and tamp it down. A fingertip is okay, but I find I get better feedback with a tamper. So the first pinch is down to the bottom, then I add more pinches. After tamping a few pinches I pull some air though the draught/stem to make sure I'm not too tight. Then, assuming all is well, I add enough pinches to top off just below the rim and tamp with my finger.

If I've packed too tight I take a pipe tool with a thin spike and stick it down into the area where the draught hole is (inside from the top of the bowl) and try adjusting the packing. Worse case scenario I dump the whole thing and start over.

IME a correctly packed pipe should draw just like a correctly rolled cigar. Easy and light. It is like sipping wine, rather than gulping beer or the pipe can get too hot. If I'm smoking 'right' a pipe with a 1&3/4" tall bowl x 7/8" bore, should take me a good 45 minutes to an hour to get to the bottom. IMHO ....... YMMV.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

As always, thanks Jimmy. I believe my packing is part of the issue for sure. I am also thinking it may not harm to do a bit of blending with the straight burley to calm things a bit.
Perhaps I will start with 15% or so of that dark sweet Virginia and see how that works.

After so many years of cigar smoking I do things automatically to prevent any bite. That practice has not carried over to my pipe smoking as yet.
