I do realize that I am smoking some tobaccos to fast and drawing to hard when relighting with my pipe zippo. I think I will switch to cigar matches and have a good striker handy. I have to learn to slow down and sip my pipe.

I let my tobacco dry out at least 20 - 30 minutes before lighting. Could be packing too tight. Too damp, too tight = lack of oxygen and human nature (meaning me) is to try and suck it to keep it burning creates steam = burnt tongue syndrome. We've all experienced it. I still keep a glass of cold water beside me with ice in it. If you think you are burning your tongue while smoking, have a sip of water. Your tongue will tell you instantly that is was too hot and is cooling down. I always let my Virginias dry out a bit more because they have a tendency to burn hot if not careful. Sipping is good. Don't be afraid to dump it and re-pack it in the process. Bottom line is it's a wonderful adventure and in a few more months you will be a steely eyed pipe smoking veteran!

Tape for at least the bevel set, after that it is optional. I just do tape all the way nowadays. Saves my having to remember (impossible) and I'm too lazy to keep records.

Hearth & Home White Knight in a very nicely restored Ehrlich from Steve at rebornpipes. Today the tobacco was left to dry 20 minutes or so. Pack was done more loosely and pipe was enjoyed much more slowly. No bite today. Thanks for the advice gentlemen.

After dinner it is going to be 965 in this Castello GGG-75 with a 5"shank from bowl to stem.

That is one smoking machine. nice razor too.

These are my opinions and am interested in what others think.

Rustication - This is an ugly pipe and I have to try to recover something.

Sandblasting - If I do this I can make the whole thing sort of funky and distract from that minor imperfection.

Spot carving - Cool grain but a bad spot that I am going to admit this is what nature gave me and add a little personality to my design.

A surface flaw - If it is not going to change the working of the pipe, and you are working with a natural material leave it there. Celebrate that it is natural and not perfect so why do you want to hide it? One of a kind?
