Thanked: 36Anyone got any thoughts on reamers? I was doing some pipe maintenance this morning and broke my cheap buttner style reamer. I'm considering a senior reamer, is it worth the money

Senior reamer is the one I have been using and has worked very well for me. Quite versatile as you can adjust for almost any bowl size and also has a drill bit tool to open any cake build up that might creep into your draft hole. I have one pipe thats particularly prone to caking up in the draft hole restricting draw over time and that feature of the tool brings it back to a nice open easy draw. You could also opt for the pipenet or castleford style reamer which has multiple size cutting heads and is quite popular as well among the pipe community. Reaming is not such a big deal really from a technical standpoint its scarier looking than in practice. Most reasonable systems do a good job without fear of hurting your pipe. The butner style is fine as well but I guess they are sort of flimsy and prone to malfunction. The senior reamer is a rock solid piece of hardware and I cant imagine it breaking easily.

If you just want to finish the job you started today another option is to take some 320 sandpaper and wrap it around a dowel or cylindrical object and just work it around the sides of the bowl in a circular fashion. I use this method on my meerschaum pipes as they are a little more sensitive to work with.

Thanked: 36Thanks, I think I'll pick up a senior when I'm in England next week. I'll try out the sandpaper thing on my meerschaum falcon bowl too. So far I've just been scraping it carefully with the back of a knife, but it feels risky. it's a pretty big bowl and the butner tool didn't touch the sides.

I've just ordered myself a Morta bowl devil anse pipe with an acrylic stem from the artisan I got my two previous pipes.
Hopefully will be finished in time for a Christmas wrapping, labelled "To Thug, from Thug".Tony
