Pipe tobacco is taxed completely differently and not nearly as expensive if you think of the quantity of tobacco you are actually purchasing. Typical 2 oz tin of pipe tobacco is about 10 bucks if you buy bulk depending how much you buy could be about 3-4 dollars. And that price reflects a quality brand. Now you can delve into the world of budget pipe tobaccos and that price might be cut in half once again. I cant really tell you how much any pipe tobaccos would cost in any given state as they tax things as they like and for sure new regulations will bring prices up in the near future. Funny to think back in the day a bunch of guys were dumping shiploads of tea into Boston harbor over this sort of thing and look where it got them couple of hundred years later.
All valid points my friend. But over all for tobacco and smoking quantity, you'd say pipe tobacco is substantially cheaper? I'm thinking of making the switch.

At the moment yes pipe tobacco is way cheaper than cigarette tobacco. If I were rolling my own tobacco as many have done due to cost constraints, it takes about .9 grams to fill one cigarette. 18 grams of tobacco per pack and for me it costs about $8.50 per pack. I could buy good premium pipe tobacco at say 10 dollars average for 50 grams. Thats the worst case scenario and im getting 2.5 times more tobacco for a little over a dollar more. Now if I were truly frugal for which I am not, I would would buy a pound of bulk Virginia / Burley blended tobacco by any of the more popular bulk blenders out there and cut my cost even more. More you buy the more you save that how it goes with most things even tobacco. It still would be tobacco of superior quality than the chemically reconstituted garbage that is found in most cigarettes today.

Not that I have noticed. This spring I had some plants that were nearly eaten bare. Just transplanted. My son came home late one night and saw that the plants were covered with Earwigs. He was ready to blame the earwigs but I researched them a bit and they like to eat Aphids. I know Aphids like tobacco so I said lets just let the Earwigs be maybe they are eating the aphids. I don't know what for sure was eating the plants but they soon grew and were only a little behind the others that didn't get eaten.

I imagine just drying any old tobacco plant and smoking it wouldn't be that great. Any one know how to get some nice variation in flavours out of it?

Like honing etc. there is much info out there. Lots to learn. Very easy to go down that rabbit hole and spend way more than than needed or than it would cost to hire someone else to do it for you.

The cost of tobacco is relatively cheap. Depending on where you live the taxes are what drive the total price.

This evening it's back to basics with some Dunhill 965. Enjoyed using a Dunhill County 4105. Just good some things never get old.

Haven’t smoke much 965 lately but over the last 40 years I’ve smoked more pounds of 965 than anything else. Need to smoke a bowl of it.

An old favorite Castello Old Antiquari that smoked great from the day I got it. Feather light and reminds me of a corn cob with that blast.

Here is another Castello Old Antiquari in the same shape. I got this off the bay about a year after the one I posted yesterday. Was really looking forward to it because the other one smoked so well right off the bat. Well ......... this one was the complete opposite. It took me a couple of years of careful smoking to break this one in. Once broken in it comes close to the other one, but doesn't equal it. Good pipe though.
