Thanked: 34I completely agree you use what you have and work to a rotation / different pipes as time and funds permit. The entire point of pipe smoking is enjoying time and the smoke. Don't get caught up in the you have to have a pipe for this and that if it's not something you can or are willing to do just smoke and enjoy. Yes tobaccos can ghost and ideally you will want different pipes for different blends etc, but the truth is until your pallet is refined and you have time with a pipe in your mouth non of it really matters. Back in the olden days gents had 2 pipes their every day workhorse, and their weekend fancy if they could afford one, and i bet you they enjoyed there pipes as much if not more then any of todays pipe snobs which i am self admittedly one of.
And of course Cobs belong in every mans rotation there is just something magical about a good ole cob pipe.

Just my two cents:
If you use blends with a lot of Latakia...use it only in one pipe.

I agree, I work for a lot of folks who have very discriminating taste but me personally..I am a man of very simple taste when it comes to things like smoking a pipe. I smoke anything and everything I got for a tobacco in anything and everything I got for a pipe. That being said, Most of my blends are very similar.
I tend to like things like Captian Black White, Tobacco Gallerias Night Cap and Blue Note, Lanes BCA, etc. Those are similar enough to one another that they cause no problems. I do have a few local blends that I like from Just For Him shop in Springfield, MO. These are more musky blends. One is called Shortcut to Mushrooms and another is Old Toby. I even smoke these in the same pipes. I just never bothered to segregate my pipes. If things get weird I give it the old salt and alcohol.
Keep in mind I am no connoisseur .... just a guy who tries to keep a busy life simple.

So I have to ask, what would be a good pipe for someone who would be starting out? I'm hoping to keep it under $80 for a decent quality pipe. Also what is the best way to break it in? I have heard of people using the honey method, is it worth it?

Thanked: 1160A good corncob as a beginner and maybe a Viking or a Peterson system pipe for around 100 bucks are good starters.System pipes are a nice cool smoke as are cob and cobs are cheap and ready to go from the start. As far as breaking in....just smoke even full bowls to build a nice cake and don't pr treat with anything.A good Tobbacco shop can give you good adice as well on the nuances of pipe smoking 101 .

Thanked: 983For breaking in, my method is the rule of thirds. Fill the bowl a third of the way for three smokes, then two thirds of the way for three smokes and finally fill the bowl for the next three. Check and repeat if necessary. Don't use honey or strawberry jam or anything, just tobacco of choice.
