I did look at some YouTube video's and chap stick was suggested as a protectant for the ebonite stems. Also someone suggested Oxy -clean in place of bleach, ever heard of that? thanks again for all the help!

You can use Oxy-clean. I have done so and it works just fine. As for Chapstick, that does the trick. Olive oil also works.

Unlike you, we do not have separate marines. Coastal Jaegers are part of the navy these days. Back then it used to be the part of the Army. Was a though job for some of the boys to become a part of the 'Donald Ducks', as we say.
