Saturday evening pipe. Commonwealth from Stanwell Royal Prince, regd 869-48.
Ice cold Benediktinerabtei Plankstetten. Good stuff.

But what is this Berliner Blumenfrau -thing? Let me explain.
The great aunt of my wife died couple weeks ago. She was born in 1916. She was living on her own, in her small house not far from my home. She was ok until the very end, smoked (or chain smoked) cigarettes and enjoeyd her every evening brandy. Although her moving was not so good anymore, her brain was working like of a young woman. Sharp as a knife, and sometimes she had a tongue of a snake when commenting life of today's society. Deep sense of humor.

However. She had collapsed at her home and was unable to get up or reach her phone. Luckily my mother in-law became worried as she hadn't answered her phone within few hours. She called an ambulance and although auntie Katri was upset and not wanting to go, nothing wrong, she just couldn't get up, but into hospital she went and the next day she was dead. Intracranial hemorrhage.
I was and i am very sad, but i think that at the age of that it would be great way to go. Sippin brandy at your home, having no clue that the next day you are dead. No long pain or suffering.

For the last few days we've been carrying her things out of her house because it will be for sale soon.

Long story short but auntie Katri lived and worked in Germany when young woman. At least in Berlin and Dresden. I think it was those 'happy years' (not so happy at all) between 1935 - 38.
We all got some few little things from her house as a memorial. I got few nice empty cigar cases, obviously she had been a cigar smoker too. My wife got some nice porcelain tableware made in V&B, Dresden. I'm pretty sure those factories do not exist any more. My son got an old alarm clock by Junghans, dated 36 and the reich logo on the back (luckily not on the front). Still works (and keeps noise) like German panzer.
I also got a beautiful massive writing table, but i have no idea where is it from as the auntie used to travel a lot after the war. She had been is USA, Canada and Australia too as she (like my wife) have some distant family members living in those places. I guess (but cannot be sure) that this Berlin flower lady (adapted by my daughter) thing must be from the times before the war.
Now the table is in my pipe room (man cave/gentleman's cabinet).

I have had my best smoke so far today.

I gpt talking to a pipe smoker in work he gave me some tips on packing.

When I have been smoking it till now i ha e started off with a really harsh tast then its got milder. It was mich better from the outset today and the bowl seemed cooler to the touch than usual. Also the after taste is much nicer whereas before it was quite like when i used to smoke cigs.

Also I hava query I have an MM Cobb. It came with a paper filter but I chucled it and am not using a filter. Is that ok????

Ya gotta share the tips man! Can't say you got good some tips without sharing, spill it!

Heh fair point. He told me to pack it tighter as I layer it up and to angle my tamp so that I am putting a little more pressure round the edges as I pack it. Seems to have helped my smoke.

Good tips! I do the same with the addition that as I pack ther upper layers tighter, I do so by "twisting" or turning the top layer of tobacco with my finger. Kind of screw the top layer down into the bowl. Then I use my tamper to push the edges down.

P.S.- Yeah, I always get rid of those cheap medico paper filters. They really do nothing but obstruct the full flow of delicious pipe tobacco goodness.

I do. I don't see a benefit and prefer without the filter. And I'm a very light pipe smoker, less than 1 bowl a day, often less that that.
