Started the day off with Carter Hall in an eagle claw meershaum, coffee on the side. Up next is some Boswell's Dan's Va Blend in a bent Pete. Got an extra day off from duty so I might as well enjoy it. Another cloudy day here in NW Florida so I will sit on the back pourch and catch up on some reading and writing. Have a great day all.

I remember when i was a kid, pipe smokers used to put few slices of cucumber into their tobacco pouches to keep tobacco moist. The smell (or aroma) of such tobacco reminds me of Machorca.
That is funny, sort of. The aroma of Machorcha is maybe something i never forget even it's been decades since i last time smelled it.

In the past I'd a lot of contacts with Russian soldiers.
I think, Machorka smells like grass, where somebody has peeing.

I just tried my first ever flake and my new pipe. It is a windy, blustery day here in Toronto, so it was a bit on the cold side out on the balcony. What flavours I could get from the tobacco with this cold I'm fighting were very nice. I think this is going to be a winner. Once I master keeping this flake lit (the first half of the bowl was a bit of a fight, but then I smoked it all the way to the bottom), it's going to be a good one.

I do not remember the scent being bad; just different. I've smoked my share of Machorcha at late seventies/early eighties when i took my first steps with tobacco. Smugglers used to import it from Russia back then.

That's sort of funny when i came to think about smugglers. At the late seventies it was Russian tobacco. At the eighties it was strong 96% proof Russian alcohol (that was somewhat common in my army days, thank heavens those days are over).
Nowadays it's snus, the thing that is banned in the whole EU excluding Sweden. Still almost (about) 75% of all men i know, use snus. I do not, but people i work with in the Navy use it, cops use it. Almost everyone use a product that is banned. Funny. Smugglers are sort of a gold miners again these days.

I've heard that in the late twenties/early thirties it was alcohol. We had a prohibition law and we also had those brave men with their small speedboats. The coast guard back then was pretending on trying to catch them while smugglers were pretending on looking like not to give them enough alcohol they ever asked.
There is a saying about what is the most important number in our history. It is 543210. It has nothing to do with our independence, winter war or anything, but April 5th, 1932, at 10.00 am first alcohol store was opened after prohibition law

And now as i came to think about snus and Sweden: för all du pipa rökare i Sverige. Grattis för den lilla Princess Estelle Bernadotte! (for all you Swedish pipe smokers: congrats for the little princess). My wife made a cake with a little Swedish flag in it. That was really happy and expected news.
