Thanked: 1160As I look back on when I started this thread regardless of politics, I feel stupid when I look at the questions I had posed to my now very good friend Sasha over in Astrakahn. So niave and ignorant. I have learned a great deal and am still learning wonderful things about this mysterious culture that was hidden behind an Iron curtain in my youth. Sasha and I never discuss the political part because we agreed it just gets in the way. So with that ,music, arts, food, customs, cinema, the list is always growing. When I watch a russian movie(most times without subtitles). I still enjoy it, sometimes even more so. And I'm doing alot more than trying to understand the plot. I'm looking at the dishes, the decorums, the mannerisms, the suroundings and details that most folks might ignore. even though I still can't speak a lot of russian,I still am listening to the nuances of how they say things, the inflections of the language, how people are dressed old and new. And that's just from cinema. When I meet the real deal I think I surprise them a little cause I really am trying to be very observant(without being creepy of course)...honestly..maybe I guess when I jump into something I like to go head first. It's fun indeed and I love every minute of it cause it's never dull and there's always something new. Cheers....goin to the store now for borcht ingredients yay !

Thanked: 2027This is a great thread for those of Russian background, perhaps boring to others.i thank you Nightblade for keeping it going.
I love american history, but when I think that lewis& clark came thru this uninhabited land a mere 220 yrs ago it boggles my mind that the russians (in many forms) and the chinese go back thousands of yrs, americans are mere pups on the scene (except for the true american indians)
I have been doing some family reaserch, turns out my grandmother was born in mongolia,I think part of Russia at the time, late 1800s
This is all wonderfull stuff for me,i truley yearn for the old days, being raised in a poor russian family, was the worst of times, was the best of times.

Thanked: 37I think you may like this article it's about Russia siding with the Union during the Civil War. I had read about this a long time ago but I found this article recently.
U.S. Civil War: The US-Russian Alliance that Saved the UnionArise, awake, and learn by approaching the exalted ones,
for that path is sharp as a razor’s edge, impassable,
and hard to go by, say the wise. Katha Upanishad – 1.3.14

Thanked: 1160Not yer Baba's Borcht...........
Okay Pixle...first off, what you said about a cheap cut of beef. In my local grocery, there ain't none such critter. But I think this would make any good russian salavate like Pavlovs dogs. My take on Borcht,Cabbage, beets, mushrooms, onions, potatos, garl ic,beef smoked sausage, fresh dill and sour cream and I had some Good sourdough bread on the side. The store didn't have any of the good German rye that I normally like to get darn !
