You mean the days when the elder gods of rocked walked the earth? they are missed.. My guitar reacher started me off playing thin lizzy
Don't forget Marc Bolan, All sadly missed..
You know i maybe should have posted this over in "no longer available".. I did say there, old stuff was better
As for Brian johnson Vs Bon Scott, I'll defend that position by saying Brian johnson was more or less Bon Scott's choice, He rated him as a singer and when bon scott sadly passed, he was the guy they called. And he made the band his own. If a band is going to have a come back album after the death of an Icon then no album in rock has proved as effective as Back in Black. Iconic in it's own right. Shoot to thrill anyone?

I can still listen to any old Metallia album on repeat for days and be a very happy camper. But the albums definitely sound old, and the mere fact that new Metallica is so different shows that the timeless element is lacking. I can't speak for the post-Newsted era, but I saw Metallica live in... 2004ish - they played nearly all old music and still sounded great.

Back in Black and maybe For Those about to Rock are truly great albums yet very different than what the band used to be on the times of Bon. I'm not saying it isn't bad at all. Just very different. But after those albums the band has started to repeat itself, imho. Their every song sounds too much alike another (damn my parents used to say that back in the early eighties when i tried to blow up our home speakers).
T-Rex will be missed. Luckily there were bands like Nazareth and Who (and many others) who didn't share the poor faith of AC/DC and SAHB.
Well here's an example of one of those dinosaurs showing the world how to take the crowds. This is a hell of a live:

I agree, i think live is a different matter though, i think it's more the production on the album sounds dated. Death magnetic was pretty good actually. But somethings not there. I don't think they've been quite right since cliff died. He was there soul, and when you watch some kinda of monster that really comes out.

Do you maybe think that was a result of the 80's and MTV though? I mean look what happened to ZZ top in the 80's.. Yes some of their material was poor (ballbreaker anyone...) but some was great, The razors edge was a solid album with some great songs, and Black Ice has been a bit of a rebirth for them.
anywho 70's Top
MTV top...
you decide..

AC/DC is one of my favorites. Classic, simple, and damn good.

I think you are right with this. MTV changed a lot. Suddenly almost all music became more acceptable and everything changed a bit towards mainstream as well. Music became a part of a big business. Nowadays it is difficult to imagine a band with such attitude as AC/DC had.
ZZ Top is a perfect example of a band turning their jacket into everything for everybody.
Of course every band has to change a bit over the years if it wants to survive, but with AC/DC i see it as a whole different band. I think it is because Brian Johnson is very different than Bon Scott. Not bad at all but just very different and not my taste.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is another example of a band that changed so much after Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines died. Yet they still try (in vain, imho) to sound the same.'That is what i do. I drink and i know things'
-Tyrion Lannister.

Am just throwing this out there and fully expect to get flame but another band that has managed to sound kinda the same because they got a very very good sound alike..?
Now the replacement doesn't quite have the "something" that steves voice had, but comes quite quite close..
By the way, Neil Schon, one of the most under rated players out there
and yeah, Skynryd today? a little bit embaressing..Last edited by tekbow; 06-23-2011 at 05:34 PM.

Speaking of Thin Lizzy... and the great rockasaurs that once walked the earth...
The recent passing of Gary Moore, and this thread made me think of this cover tune... played by just about anybody who ever was anybody.
