Thanked: 101Well done Str8shooter! That doe had a bad day. I got a nice 9 this year. My son took the skull cap/antlers off the shelf outside and a stray dog/critter got them....

Well, I got my first buck this year, I am not too picky on the size of the rack since I am primarily a meat hunter.
Here's the Tale:
So my brother, a buddy and I came out for the weekend. We did the get up early walk out to the stand and wait bit. Fun, but cold/boring at times. All we saw was squirrels, blu jays, turkeys and does (no tags for those). We came back in for breakfast at 9:30. Cooked it up, ate and had a "power" nap.
My brother woke both me and out buddy up to proudly show off 2 does standing in the field. Woopdy ****ing do.... I was awake now. They went back to sleeping/reading while I grabbed the Remington 700 in .223 off the wall just to watch em through the scope. I watched about 40 minutes when all of a sudden both does put their heads up and look to the woods. Not 60 seconds later another deer emerges. A decent size buck (though only a atypical spike horn though. But that didn't stop my heart from pounding.
I alerted my brother who woke our buddy- "Dave! Wake up! It's about to get loud!". Dave, a big boy, got up so fast I could barely believe it. I got my sand bag rest and opened the sliding window (very handy in a deer camp FYI) and stuck the barrel of the .223 out the window and loaded up. The buck was running the does all around the the field trying to "get some" I held off for a good minute or so and waited for him to turn broadside and slow the hell down. Finally he stopped and turned, BLAM! The best trigger pull I can recall, smooth and crisp, and watched the bullet strike, then a rapid manipulation of the bolt for a followup if necessary. I saw the deer quiver in pain and run off before another shot could be had.... ****!
I unloaded and grabbed my .303 off the wall and we went to investigate. We walked slowly and softly. Dave led the "charge" with his Remington 1100 not 15 feet from where I shot him Dave yells "he's down!" Thumper (I named the deer, he was trying to hump before I thumped him good) only made it about 30y into the trees. We text-ed my dad to join us at the camps and give some assistance on gutting. He got there in good time, 15 mins or so and I had at it, under his direction.
It was my first deer. After 10 years of Half ass rifle hunts I dropped my first buck, with a .223!
The spot we found him at (yes, I have a .303 with me, only cause its a lighter gun then the .223)
After gutting/hanging, we got a pic with me and the actual rifle that made the shot.
The whole gang
Time to party! (yes that is an m72 rocket launcher, "bear defense")

Depends on what province you are in. In Ontario, the regs just say "Center Fire" for deer.
However, had I a bigger caliber rifle at the camp with a scope that I knew as well as the .223 (over a 1000 rd. through it this summer alone) I would have used it in a heart beat. The .303 only has about 10 rounds through it with me (brought it for the thick bush area where my stand is), and I had a 7.62x39 CZ-858 & SKS, but I wouldn't have trusted those iron sights out past 100m. The deer was standing right on the spot where I put my target during the summer 120m. I knew exactly where that bullet was going to hit within 2cm.
