Merrill makes great hiking shoes, just cannot find any Merrills that cover a 4E foot.

You should have ripped the straps off, and used the foam for putting on an uncomfortable picnic chair or something.
I am still wearing a pair i bought for one pound in england 10 years or more ago, however pairs i get here for $6 seem to poo themselves after 6 months or so. The last pair died when i was walking home from the pub (about 5 km) so i was walking in the dark, along the road, with one thong at 2 am.Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

I'm on my feet all day, in an Oncology clinic so I wear a pair of New Balance 860v4's...just picked them up last week, each year I buy the same model from the same local store. They come in 4E (extra wide) and fit my feet perfectly.
Each year they come out with a new version (v1, v2, v3 and this year was v4) the style improves each year, along with the support but the fit never changes, and that's what I love about them.
