The plan of attack i've been running through my mind, for knives and razors, is to keep making full passes to take the whole blade down little by little to reach the desired bevel. But not having put steel to belt yet, i'm not sure if it will work that way.

I would concentrate on the two sides of the wheel, maybe a half inch in from either side. I would put the pressure behind where I want to grind, the spine-middle-ish. The tricky part is not canting the the blade one way or the other, it is easy to gouge the blade with corner of the wheel.

The way that I have ruined a lots of blades is by putting pressure on the portion of the blade that is not supported by the wheel and gouging the blade. The two inch dip is my nemesis.

This is it. The 2" dip is still causing me problems regularly, and it is difficult to avoid it because it requires even metal removal. And if you put pressure on the part of the blade that is not supported by 'wheel' you wil gouge out the blade very quickly. Like Charlie, I've ruined blades that way.

Thanks for all the advice fellas.

    Second time's a charm

I decided to concentrate on getting the grind right and not waste time sanding off the heat treat scale. I actually quite like the rustic look.

It's honed up to 12k, stopped on chromium oxide and finished on plain leather.

    I'm off for a Shave!!

The bevel looks perfect Mike just like I like them really small and neat.

Cheers Jamie.... It took some doing but I'm sure the next one will go a little easier.

You will have to round off the heel Mike I personally don't mind a sharp toe though as I only use square points.
