The motor is a old Westinghouse 1725 rpm,220v, 1 1/2 hp, it is a 184 frame. The motor started its life as an air compressor motor. I bought it used an an electric motor shop it has been rebuilt, new bearings, etc. It is a beefy motor with big castings. I think it will work well.

Looking forward to how this turns out. I have an old Square Wheel grinder that I have refurbished but could use another one. Little jealous of the lathe. Like Mike B's idea for a motor

Here are a few more in progress shots of the grinder. I used a hinge from the welding supply store to make the pivot for the tracking wheel. For the platen I used a 2" contact wheel at on end and a 3" on the other, the platen surface is glass. The arm is kind of like the multipurpose arm you seen on the gib and eerf grinders. I will be able to rotate the arm 360 to get 2" or 3" wheel, flat platen or slack belt.

There are a lot of good ideas growing into this one Charlie.

I found another engine. I like this one because it already has a tapered drive wheel installed. Red Wing hit 'n miss model engine - YouTube

Love those engines,Grew up in silicone valley when in was just Orchards, all flood irrigation with hit and miss engines running all night pumping water.
Restoed a couple back in the day.when the valley turned commercial my dad and I would buy them for scrap at 2 cents a lb,late 50s.Dad would always remove the mags and store them away.
I had maybe 30 of them in a box when he died,Ebayed them for my ma,made more off of them than some engines sell for today (non-restored engines).

Charlie, you did build the combo 2"/3"/flat platen, slack belt piece right? Sorry, I'm not sure the actual name of it. It looks like a factory item. Awesome! I'm torn between total jealousy and hopelessness, or mild hero worship.... Looks great!

Yes, I made it. If you were holding it in your hand and could see it up close, you would definitely see that is home made. The camera makes everything look good.

Here is what I have so far, I have mounted everything on a piece of plate. I had to revise my plans on where the drive wheel was going to be. I moved it down and back to take up more slack. Sometimes my TLAR (that looks about right) engineering bites me in the butt. I may have to have a set of plans some day as opposed to just winging it.

one step forward, two steps back
