Building New Grinder
I thought I would post some progress shots of my grinder build. I am building a grinder similar to the one in this thread. Here is what I have so far. motor 1 1/2 hp and metal cut out from supplier, and I made the idler/tracking, and the drive wheels tonight.

Looks like you're putting Mike's old lathe to good use. Are you going to weld or bolt the frame?

I hope to weld it. A workman shouldn't blame his tools for bad work, but my made in China cracker box welder barely qualifies as a welder. I am going to stick it together as best I can. I have a feeling I will be doing a lot of grinding to hide my ugly welds. Yes I am enjoying the lathe.

You may already know this trick - when you weld the box that hold the bar that holds the wheels, do it with the bar in, and use one or two layers of newspaper between the bar and the inside of the "box". This will give you some clearance when the welding shrinks the sides of the box. We made a batch of them at a Guild of Metalsmiths workshop, and that was what we did. We still needed a hydraulic press to get some of the shafts out after welding. Used a TIG welder. Good luck with your machine. I can get you a set of drawings for the ones we made if you want - very similar to a KMG.

jump ahead to about 19 minutes to see this thing running.Get to the motor Charlie, the motor. Maybe a leftover pumpjack motor...
