Thread: Building New Grinder

Really nice grinder Charlie.

I like how quiet it is. But the best part is the sexy shape the spring takes when under tension.
I have given up trying to totally design and draw stuff. I will block out a model to get relationships and then start building. It seems one thing leads to another during a build. Sometimes it means backtracking a bit but seems to be the best way for me.

I updated my crumb catcher/dust collector tube that lives under the contact wheel. I was getting tried of it catching on fire. I used a furnace vent and metal tubing from the hardware store. So far so good, I still have to empty the steel wool looking swarf out of the tube every now and then, but the tube is not catching on fire (that is a big plus in my book).

Good idea. I have my water bucket under mine, but this means I end up with nasty cooling water. I may steal your idea.

I did not use plans, I used TLAR engineering (that looks about right). The grinder was built more or less along the lines of a KMG or KMG clone grinder. There are plans for similar grinders on the net if you search.

Hey Charlie, thanks for the link. I have been wanting to build one and with plans it is easier to modify different things. Also I have a curse I am a machinist and a coded welder. Two bad things together!You almost have to make everything yourself. Twice!!!!!!!!!
Let me also take this opportunity to tell you that your videos are very informative and I have watched a couple, tons of times. Your work speaks for itself. Phenomenal !!!!!!!

Great grinder. I am trying for some time to built mine. Already had laser cut parts from plans above some times ago by my good friend but before I had chance to pick them up they went AWOL. Now saving money for new material and hope to find some european supplier of contact wheels as price to bring it from US is unbelievable. With a bit of luck hopefully soon will be as quietly like your running in my shed.

I couldn't help noticing your avatar-what art(Iaido,Iaijutsu,kenjutsu) and what style do you study.
I practice Seitei Gata and a little kenjutsu but am way out of shape.
