I can't use my straight at college!
Hi everyone,
I go to Penn State University, and I emailed Judicial Affairs to double check that having a straight razor for shaving in my dorm was OK, they said it wasn't! In PA straights are legal but they said it is considered a knife/dangerous weapon per the Community Standards Code.
The worst part is I just bought my first straight razor a week ago from Kenrup, the Double Arrow. What the heck do I do now?! I'm always at college except for the breaks we have.
I'm just really bummed right now, I haven't even gotten a first shave in cause my brush isn't here yetI go back to PSU on Sunday.
EDIT: ISSUE SOLVED, Got permission from the University Police.Last edited by jcw122; 01-08-2009 at 08:44 PM.

Thanked: 131Yeah when I went to university having my pets in Halls of residence was against regulations too.
My pets had a great time in halls.
If you seriously think that everyone at college follows rules rigidly then you are likely to get a very rude awakening. When I was at Uni there was a bigger problem with people using illegal substances. I mean seriously, what are they gonna do, spot check your room? Hide it in the underwear drawer. Are they gonna come looking to see if its clean??

Well, is there anypleace to privately shave? For example, I lived in a very old dorm my last year in dorms. I could get from the public shower back to my room in about 15 steps, and I had a sink in my room. I wish I had gotten into straights back then! I'd be a super-expert by now!
I'm guessing you do not have this kind of privacy. Perhaps a hotpot and a mirror in the dorm room? Could make hot towels and fill a bowl with hot water?
Or, you could have just not asked, and then feigned complete surprise..."Really, I can't SHAVE?"

Do it anyway, you'll be way cool! Just use a little discretion, dont be obvious and NEVER let someone else get their hands on your razor!

Just go on anyway, it is only illegal if you get caught.
Follow the intentions of the rule instead of the letters.

I agree on shaving in your room. If you have a mirror and go with the suggestion of using something like an electric tea kettle for hot water/towels you've got what you need. I don't see how it could be a violation if you're shaving in the privacy of your own room. How could they argue that anyone else could potentially be hurt by you shaving in private.
Then again, if they're considering it a potential weapon, they're concern is simply having it anywhere on campus including your room.
Bummer.

No way they'll ever know. Either keep it from the RA or make friends with him. Only real issue is privacy while using it. No way I'd use a straight in a public dorm bathroom. Especially at the high-traffic times- you'd be signing your own death warrant with all those people moving around behind you. If interrupting wives are dangerous to straight shavers, rowdy college boys are a disaster waiting to happen.

I've never been to college so I don't know what the privacy or lack of it is with regard to shaving. If I thought I could get away with it I would shave with the straight.
Then again it ain't worth getting kicked out of school.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
