    Default Straight Razor Shaver Ages.

I am just wondering what sort of ages most people are that use a straight razor.

I myself am 23, and I have seen a few other younger members here too.

By no means at all am I being ageist, this is purely just out of interest. So I am not looking for the "you are only as old as you feel" comments that are sure to follow a post like this one haha.

The reason I ask is that most of my friends who are my age have never even seen a straight razor in the flesh, only on movies and things like that. And are totally blown away when the find out I shave with one.

I am wondering what gets people interested in straight razors most, and what sort of differences age makes in people's interest to start shaving with a straight razor.

I myself being like the idea of not having to buy disposable razors and polluting the environment with unnecessary waste. Plus I really appreciate good craftsmanship, I will buy anything made by a person who had made things by hand their whole life any day over buying something from a shop which is pumped out of a factory if I can.
I also like knives and other camping/survival tools etc, so straight razors are really a no brainer if you like sharp things.
Not to mention, how much more bad arse is it to shave with a straight razor than a crappy bit of plastic with a disposable blade?

I am not really all that interested in collecting rare blades and never using them etc. Some might even be horrified to think that I would buy a rare NOS, and would unpack it and use it straight away.

Anyway, just wondering what everyones thoughts are on this subject. I would like to hear why some of you decided to start straight razor shaving. Was it the collect-ability? Because its the greener option? Bored of disposable razors etc, and if you feel that your age made a difference in what inspired you to get interested.

    Cheers.

    Cayne

I'm 18. I tend to like older things, from clothing styles to shaving gear, so that's part of what got me into it. Not gonna lie, watching Sweeney Todd when it came out a few years ago also got me thinking about it a little bit.

As for what actually pushed to look into it I was just sitting on the couch watching tv with my mom and the new Gillette Pro-Glide commercial cme on, and we both kinda laughed at it's claims of being the closest shave you'll ever get. She then commented on how the closest shave you'll get is with a barber's razor.

I honestly had no idea if one could easily get ahold of a straight razor nowadays so I did a quick amazon search and came up with a bunch of stuff like the feather disposable straights. There were also some Dovos on there, which looked ike the real deal, so I did some more googling and came across a couple blogs by people who had gotten into it and eventually found SRP. From there I got a razor off the classifieds and got the rest of my gear and here I am now.

I'm 20 years old and I've just started straight shaving a few weeks ago. I'm all about learning random skills and classic shaving was always near the top of my list. I'm also attracted to the nostalgia involved with straight shaving. There's just something about slowing down and doing something the "old fashioned" way. It's a kind of brotherhood that you share not only with straight shavers today, but all the men who came before you.
I was also fed up with paying outrageous amounts for the disposable razor blades and clogging the blade with half a stroke.
Also I'm not gonna lie, there's nothing that makes you feel more awesome than taking a crazy sharp blade to your face everyday, lol.

    Woohoo, youngest one so far.

I turned 19 a few weeks ago. Started when I was 18 -obviously- and that was fun on the first day of college... Some kid -Who is actually now my only really good friend on campus, and roommate for next year- walked in to the bathroom (big communal one) to see me with an 8/8ths Wostenholm at my throat, and promptly did a double take and slid/fell...

It was a great way to get known around the dorm building.

I'm interested in the straight razor because I've always been fond of old things that work as well as or better than modern methods... Big fan of pocket watches, nice suits -especially older styles... I do own a tailcoat, I am quite proud of that- and the like, so straight razors just fell in to line.... I used to shave with a pocket knife, and get about the same results as a Gillette Fusion razor after about 2-3 shaves from the razor, and the knife was easier to maintain and more fun, so I went with it. I now know that the knife was sharpened to about 2000-3000 grit... Big difference going to a 12000 grit razor.

Lastly, I got tired of paying 15$ for three cartridges that lasted about 10 shaves each, and made a chore out of shaving... Granted, now I'm paying 5-75$ per razor... But at least I'm enjoying it!

I'm 55. I had found a Double Edge razor perhaps 10 years ago, and had been using that with no training other than trial and error. I'm not sure what led me to straights, perhaps a youtube vid or something. Found SRP about a month ago, and now my life is ruined! Hehe!

I am now free from buying disposible blades!! My face is happy! It may take a few years to re-coupe the expence of the new Dovo's, but I like the look as well!

I'm in college too, and I'm kinda sad that I won't have a communal bathroom this year to have those kinda moments in. My roommates will have to do I guess.
