I'm 48 years old. The future looks bright with so many younger guys taking up straight razor shaving. I started with a DE and got swept up in the Trac-II tsunami of the late 70's/early 80's. It's never too late for guys like myself to come back from the plastic multi-blade ways and embrace the simple and effective elegance of the straight.

Thanked: 0Started a little while ago
I'm 18, and got really into it when a friend told me that using those plastic things was a waste of time and money, so I stopped. I don't have a straight yet, but I plan to get a shave first, then buy one (I haven't shaved in like 4 months, so I'm looking forward to it ). I knew they where around, but just never found a barber who would do it.
In short, I also want a better shave. I'm sick of getting razor burns, so I thought that I would give this a try.

Thanked: 1160Yeah...the old ways are still good ways thank the good lord. Now if we could just bring back 1940's-50's prices on everything and maybe get unadulterated food back on the grocery shelves and maybe even have furniture made outta real wood again instead of press board and......ah well, guess I'll take this for now,it's a positive start.

Thanked: 77I'm 39, but I don't think my age or a particular time in my life brought me to the straight razor.
This is what got me there:
- Looking for cheaper simpler ways of shaving - had discovered I could use hand soap and cheap disposable - this led me to $2 shave stick and brush, which led me to...
- Shaving forums - Discovered these when looking for better way to lather. When I was in my early 20s (the early 1990's) the internet wasn't exactly mainstream, so this information wasn't as readily available
- This led me (briefly) to the DE and then after remembering about a couple of straights lying in a drawer in the family garage for 30yrs... it led me to the straight razor!
In a nutshell
-rather than an individual's age it could be more about timing - being here in the early 21st century with the internet and SRP, making information more available. Even for many of the older guys who have dabbled with the SR, it has been SRP that has rekindled their interest.
Well, that's enough from me... for the meantime!
All the best,
Michael.Last edited by FTG; 08-02-2010 at 11:24 AM.

32 here, going to be 33 in a month or so.
Here is my story. Been shaving with mach 3 since I was 18. I would stretch those cartriges out for months, maybe switching one out ever 6-8 weeks. Use the shaving gell rubbed in by hand. Being an avid PC gamer, I regular the Steam forums, and noticed this thread come up. It was more about DEs than straights, but it certainly got me thinking. For one, I dont' like disposable stuff. I guess you would call me a minimalist materialist. I like my stuff, but I don't want a lot of it, nor do I want crap. I want things that will last, that have an asthetic value as well as utilitarian. So naturally the DEs fit into my values much better than the plastic disposable cartrige razors. I'm also concerned about the distribution of plastic wastes in our environment. [rant]It sickens me that people use a material deigned to last until the end of time in a product made to be used once and then thrown away. [/rant] So anyway, that thread pointed out badger and blade so I started checking out that forum. That is where I came across straight razors. Now that had an instant allure that far overshadowed DEs. Of course I knew of straights before, but I didn't think anyone still used them. So I do my research, pick up a nice sharpened Dovo from SRD, a cheep strop (which I regret) some nice after shave, 15 dollar badger brush and I'm off to the races. Straight Razor Shaver Ages
I started using a straight 10 months ago, when I was 65. I'm hooked! Trying to get my sons interested and they say they "might one day" but haven't got time now. I will keep working on them!!

I'm 24; started when I was 21.
BTW, there are a few other threads about age, some including polls to make it easier to see the age ranges of those who "voted."

I'm 45. Starting straight razor shaving when I was 16, don't know any other way.
